I admit, unashamedly, that the Awkward. finale made me cry.

MATTY!

I was the one who created this category in the middle of the season, but I never got around to writing a fanfic. Sad, isn't it?

Of course, the finale changed everything! So here we go. Please review!

Matty McKibben had never had his heart broken until Jenna Hamilton stomped it to pieces at the winter formal with her lovely high-heeled shoes.

For girls, Matty had always been the center of attention. There were girls who lusted for him since he started pre-K. He was a ladies' man before he could spell. He knew that fact now, and he'd known it back then, and from the beginning he hadn't exactly reveled in it—but he clearly didn't let it go to waste.

And was this his punishment? Chasing after all those girls, and finding the one he thought he wanted the most—Jenna—and then watching as she slipped away as he screwed up again and she kissed his best friend? A passionate kiss, for that matter, Jake holding her close to him as their lips met?

But those worries came later. Karma, or fate, or however the world worked, was not on Matty's mind at the exact moment when things took place. On his mind was shock, and then dread, how utterly peculiar his heart felt as it dropped into his stomach, and the utter devastation that ravaged him whole.

He froze. They seemed to kiss for hours, before pulled away from each other and smiling.

Then Jenna lifted her head and stared straight at him, and her pretty boxed corsage felt like a block of lead in his hands. He thought about his brother, and how he had been told that "McKibbens are winners" just this afternoon and how now he felt like nothing mattered anymore.

As Matty stood there, staring at Jenna, Jake caught his eye and grinned like everything was alright, and came over with Jenna behind him.

It was awkward and it hurt like hell.

He hoped his voice would break like his heart when he opened his mouth to talk.

Jenna looked like she was going to cry out of pure confusion and indecision and Matty felt like he was going to cry out of something else entirely.

So he asked her if it was too late.

And she said yes.

Matty watched as she gripped Jake's hand, and he knew that it was all over.

The sophomore formal court was decided and he vaguely heard his name being called for prince but it barely registered. His eyes were on Jake and Jenna standing so close together with their fingers intertwined, and his heart heavy and he was out the door and walking away with one final painful look, tossing her corsage into a trashcan with trembling hands as he left.

He went home and his brother asked him how it went and Matty just pushed past him without a word.

He went into his room and took off his shoes and his socks and his jacket and his pants and his shirt and fell into bed in just his boxers, staring up at the ceiling hollowly.

When Matty fell asleep, he dreamt of Jenna. He was kissing her like Jake had kissed her tonight, but better, fiercer, harder, like she'd never be his again. Some part of him knew that something was wrong, but since this was a dream he couldn't quite place it. So Matty brushed those thoughts away, and he said to her with all the meaning and sincerity in the world, "I love you, Jenna."

He touched her cheek and her face lit up with a radiant smile, and he asked her softly, his tone somehow yearning, "Do you love me? Do you choose me?"

And she said yes.
