Where Darkness Comes

Prologue

Year: 1514

POV: ?

Darkness - that was the first thing that registered in my mind as I slowly began to regain consciousness. Everything around me was just a blur, the shadows meshing together as my eyes attempted to focus on one thing; anything at all. While my vision was struggling for a clear picture, I became very aware of how cold I was … and how much pain I was in. I took in a shaky breath, only to have the shocking chill of the night air burn my lungs. I tried to call out, to make myself known, but only blood escaped my lips. I couldn't find the strength to cough, or groan, or even cry, although I wanted to very much. A migraine split through every corner of my brain, my entire head pulsating in time with the frantic beat of my heart. Not being able to move even a digit, I simply stayed frozen in place, laying broken on the ground and terrified out of my mind.

I was fading away, slipping into the dark void that I knew was death. I had never been particularly religious - not at all, in fact, but I didn't dare voice my opinion to my neighbors - but as I laid there, dying in a pile of forest debris, I desperately awaited a white light; and sure enough it came, but not in the form I had expected.

It was the moon that greeted me with its' light, shining brilliantly and whole in the ebony sky. It was the only thing that I was able to see clearly, and because of that I held onto its' image for as long as I could. Yet as I gazed upon the brightly lit sphere, I could have sworn I heard it speak. The words were soft, the soothing tone carried by a passing zephyr in the night.

"Patience, my young child."

I was pretty sure I was hallucinating - what in my time of death and all - but then I heard the voice a second time. It's tone had risen to an audible hum as it began to speak once more. "You shall live, dear one."

As those words drifted past my ears, I discovered that I was able to breathe again, and much of the pain that had resided in my head was soon gone. My aching limbs, which had previously felt the sting of fire, were now limp against the dirt. My entire body went numb, a somewhat relaxing vibrating sensation traveling through my veins as my wounds began to subside. I could feel myself levitating, my entire self - both body and soul - drifting intimately closer to the moons' light. I looked upon the glowing orb in the sky, astounded as it's easing tone returned to my ears one last time.

"Your name, young child … is Devoveo, the Spirit of Warning."

TO BE CONTINUED

[AU: Very short beginning to this story, but it'll get better. Let me introduce myself: I am Shadow (ShadowManipulator7) and I enjoy writing, ice cream, but hate cream cheese. This particular fanfiction is going to be somewhat darker than the themes in the movie 'Rise Of The Guardians', but it'll have the same fairytale feel anyways ... I hope. My OC, "Devoveo", will be the main POV for this story, going off and on with other characters sometimes. There will be a sequel after this story, so just be patient and keep reading. I'm going to be updating this whenever I can - *cough* whenever I don't get distracted *cough* *cough* - so don't expect immediate updates. Signing off - ShadowManipulator7 '-.-']
