Saving You
Time stood still as hundreds of missiles hung motionless in the air. Charles was looking at him, his face anguished "they're just following orders". Erik almost laughed at the irony. As though that made them any better. He had seen people following orders, had heard that plea so many times...following orders didn't redeem a person. Following orders meant that they were too spineless to defend their own beliefs. Hatred he could understand. Conviction he could credit. Mindless obeisance he could only despise. "I've been at the mercy of people just following orders" he replied. And I will never let them get ahold of 's what it came down to in the end. He could give up his revenge for Charles, bottle his anger, try to be a better man...but he couldn't watch that idealism, that strange, paradoxical innocence be slaughtered at the hands of humanity. Despite knowing the darkest parts of men's minds, hearing their twisted plans and hateful thoughts, Charles was still determined to think the best of people and Erik would protect that, even if it meant losing the only friends he had. And he would start by exterminating these bastards who had tried to destroy them. I'm sorry Charles he thought sadly, knowing that his friend couldn't hear him through the helmet, But having you hate me is something I'll endure...The missiles turned and shot back to their masters. If it means saving you.
