Prologue

'Katniss,' My sister, Prim exclaimed 'You're still alive! We thought you had died when the hovercraft lifted you away! I was worried mother and I would have to make a living off of healing! I-I-I-I-'

'It's okay Prim, I'm here now, everything will be fine again. I'll make sure we have enough game to trade and live on for as long as we can…'

But then what? I couldn't just run out of game and then let Prim die. I know Snow is doing all he can to stop my hunting with Gale out in the forest. He's probably left a bunch of Peacekeepers out there to hunt ME down. I needed to check.

'I'll be back in a bit Prim, OK?'

The question is, how long is a bit?

Chapter one

Here again?!

I was right. There were Peacekeepers everywhere. I had to keep out of sight and reach of all of them, which meant hiding up in the trees like Rue, and shooting them one by one.

So I did. I quickly and stealthily picked up my bow and quiver of arrows and scampered up the closest tree. I hopped from tree to tree and shot Peacekeepers as soon as I came to them. The further from the fence I got, the more I could see what looked to me like the small square of a force field like the one in the arena from the quarter quell.

I shot it.

Biggest mistake of my life. (I really mean it, even after all I've been through)

I flew backwards and landed right by a bunch of angry Peacekeepers who were just getting over the fact they had been blown away (literally!).

I woke up back at the Capitol with Peeta, Haymich and Eiffe Trinkett. To be precise, we were on the train on our way TO the Capitol, but why?

'Ugh, I feel horrible, why are we going to the Capitol? I need a drink, Peeta, would you mind getting me some wat- oh wait, I've got one here.' I took a giant swig of water and carried on babbling for the duration of the train journey, which luckily for my companions, wasn't very long.

Peeta managed to get a word in; 'We're going to the Capitol because Snow has personally asked us to train the new Tributes of District 12 this year!'

'Oh yippee…' I said, rather sarcastically, without realising that they were in the room at that moment in time.

I gasped to see that Rosie, one of the small girls who was actually quite nice, was one of this year's tributes. Then I saw that Peeta was crying and I wanted to find out why, but then I saw him.

One of Peeta's brothers was a tribute, and Peeta was going to have to train him and send him to his death…
