Harry Potter & all other characters don't belong to me, but to JK Rowling.
Neville stood, listening to his heart pounding in his ears. All around him there are bodies lying, sparks flying, and spells shooting out at people. He knew he needed to go, to find Luna. He needed to, maybe for the last time, to feel her heart beat, to wrap his arms around her.
He ran, as fast as he could, dodging spells, and throwing out a few of his own. He ran through the halls, searching for the long blond hair he knew so well. Finally his eyes rested upon the sight of Luna fighting a Death Eater. Neville quickly blasted a Stunning spell at the Death Eater, before grabbing Luna, and running down the halls.
They ducked into an empty classroom. "We can talk here, though we'll have to talk quickly." Neville told Luna.
"Neville..." Luna whispered, running her finger along his jawline, a move that sent chills down Neville's spine. "Luna, we don't have long. I just want to say I love you... I really do. I couldn't face this battle without telling you first." Neville practically had to shout to be heard over the din.
"I love you too Neville. I always have, since the day we met." Luna whispered into Neville's ears. They clasped hands for a few seconds, before Neville shouted "We have to go..."
Neville and Luna fought bravely, as did all the others. Soon, after Voldemort died, the battle was over. In the end all there was an eerie silence, as everyone tried to come to terms with what had happened.
Neville breathed heavily, his heart pounding, and with adrenaline running through his veins still. He searched the crowds. He saw the Weasleys were talking quietly in a group. All of their faces were tear streaked. Neville saw Harry holding Ginny's hand, squeezing it tightly. Ron and Hermione were whispering to each other. It was so quiet, you could hear each breath taken. Neville saw Tonks and Lupin, their hands barely touching, and he had to swallow the tears he felt rising. His eyes searched the large groups of people, before he found who he was looking for.
Luna sat on the steps of the Grand Hall, looking stunned. Neville made his way over to her. Luna looked up with tears in her eyes. Neville brushed the tears that fell away, and wrapped his arms around Luna.
"Neville... It's so awful. So many people are gone." Luna whispered.
"I know, I know," Neville murmured. "It's going to be alright." Neville stroked Luna's hair. They sat like that, just hugging for a long time. Neville wasn't sure how long it was before they pulled away.
"Neville..." Luna started to speak, but Neville stopped her. He pressed his lips against hers, and it felt like the sweetest gift after the horror they had seen. After they broke away, Neville pressed his hand against Luna's, feeling her heart beating as his was. Then Luna smiled for the first time in a long time.
