"Come here," Dean spoke softly, pulling a lifeless Sam into his arms, holding him tight.

"You're going to be okay, Sammy," Dean said, sitting on the Library floor, blocking out his final violent act wearing the mark. Killing his brother.

"You just need some sleep," Dean pulled Sam closer, rocking him, and humming softly. Not allowing himself to remember the blade he plunged into Sam's chest and the gloating smile he wore watching the life leave his little brother's eyes. The burning sensation on his arm as the mark disappeared taking the hate and rage with it.

Followed by the disabling realization of what he'd done, so painful and unbearable Dean created another reality. One a part of him threatened to disrupt, seemingly right under the surface.

"Hey look at this Sammy," Dean said eyeing one of Sam's favorite books, Great Expectations.

Of all the books strewn about the Library floor, courtesy of the Stynes, that this one had been placed within his grasp, helped solidify Dean's delusion.

"You just need some rest to get your strength back, you'll be fine," Dean said lowering Sam so his head rested against his upper chest, cuddling him like a child. Then maneuvering himself so his back was supported by a nearby bookcase.

Dean then picked up the book and began to read. Not more than a few pages later Dean heard movement.

"He's sleeping," Dean put a finger to his lips to notify Castiel who had just appeared in the Library doorway.

"I know," Castiel answered, watching with tears in his eyes as Dean returned to reading.

"May I join you?" Castiel asked, and with Dean's nod of approval he moved closer and sat beside them.

"How about I read? So you can hold Sam more comfortably?" he suggested.

"Sure," Dean handed the book over and wrapped his arms more securely around his brother, Sam's head now tucked under Dean's chin.

"Sammy will be himself again once he gets some sleep." Dean announced.

Castiel nodded in agreement. He wasn't about to jar Dean out of this shaky delusion he created.

Because Dean wasn't entirely wrong.

Castiel had discovered recently from all the time he never wanted to spend with Rowena. That the spell of the mark of Cain can be broken by Sam's death. That Sam would return to life. But unless Castiel healed Sam's wound from the blade, he would die again.

So Castiel read while he waited. Soon Sam would stir and Dean wouldn't have to pretend anymore.
