Very Funny
It was funny, he thought, as he fell to the floor.
Very funny. He'd always thought that the good guys win. They always did in the movies, in the books, in the games. Oh, the games he used to play, back on the island with Riku and Kairi, Selphie and Tidus, he and Wakka.
They'd play sea monster! Tidus and Wakka would swim about under the water and throw balls at Kairi and Selphie – it was Riku and Sora's job to save them and catch all the balls. He wondered whether Tidus and Wakka ever did get onto the Blitzball team. They promised that it would be the very first thing they'd do once they got to high school, and Sora promised to watch them from the pool edge.
He missed out on that too; the first day of high school. It had been planned from the first day of their holidays. He would meet up with Kairi at the end of their road and walk further on to get to Riku's house, then they'd all walk to school together.
How Kairi must have felt when she realised that she would have to walk to school, all on her own without Riku and that mystery boy (because, Sora remembered, she'd forgotten all about him). How sad and down-heartened she must have been in her new school uniform, all done up nice and proper like a true freshman.
She probably walked with Selphie.
Selphie... Selphie had had a crush on Sora ever since they were ten. That was... four years now. Sora was almost shocked by this revelation. He wondered if when she forgot about him, her love disappeared completely. He hoped so, because he had never been able to find it within himself to return the feelings, despite the constant hints.
Maybe he wasn't such a good guy after all. Maybe all this stuff he had done to his friends: hadn't been there for Tidus and Wakka, left Kairi, let down Selphie. Maybe that was what it was. Maybe he was a bad guy.
And he knew that bad guys never win. They never did in the movies, in the books, in the games.
But then he remembered that he couldn't help those things. It wasn't his fault he wasn't there for Tidus and Wakka – he had been fighting off monsters instead. It wasn't his fault he'd left Kairi – he had been trapped in a castle. It wasn't his fault he didn't love Selphie back – love doesn't work that way.
He was a good guy. He was. He had saved so many innocent lives, locked so many keyholes, made it safe for people to walk in their streets again. He was the best guy there was, he was doing it all for friends and strangers alike. Selflessly slashing through heartless, considerately crying for the dead he did not even know and rendering hope towards the worlds.
So, he found it funny, very funny, that he was about to lose.
That he was about to die.
Very fu...
