Sweeney could hear her calling his name. "Mr T?" Mrs Lovett's voice rang out, floating up the stairs, "Mr Todd?"

Her footsteps grew nearer and she appeared suddenly in the doorway. A sunny smile was fixed on her face and in her hands she held a cup of tea. Steam from the cup whirled upwards, obscuring her face slightly. Sweeney, who had been busy sharpening his blades, looked up at her.

"I've brought you a cup of tea, love," Mrs Lovett explained, "Nothing like a nice cup of tea to start you're morning off. I'll just put it over here, shall I?" She bustled over to the window and placed the cup on the window sill, "Oh it's such a lovely day! Look at that sun, its marvellous."

As usual Sweeney tried to ignore her ramblings on.

"You know what today is, don't you, Mr T?" She went on, turning to face him with a hopeful smile.

"Tuesday?" Sweeney replied blankly.

Mrs Lovett chuckled. "You don't half make me laugh! You haven't really forgotten what today is, have you?" She said. There was a little bit of fear in her voice.

Sweeney finally allowed himself a smile.

"Of course not," He said, he then added, in a forcefully cheery voice, "Happy Birthday, my dear."

Mrs Lovett looked beside herself with happiness. Sweeney walked over to the window to stand beside her. He began digging around in the pockets of his blood stained jacket.

"Here," He said softly.

"A present?" Mrs Lovett gasped.

In to her out stretched palm he dropped a beautiful silver chain necklace on which a group of gleaming rubies hung. Mrs Lovett marvelled at it. Red, the colour of the setting sun, the colour of roses, the colour of love. The colour of blood.

"It's amazing," Mrs Lovett sighed, "You don't mind putting it on for me, do you, love?"

Sweeney took the necklace back from her and she turned around so that he could drape it over her neck. He fastened the clasp swiftly, a grin playing on his lips. He was glad that Mrs Lovett liked her present.

After all, she didn't have to know that he'd taken it from the pocket of the dead jewler he'd disposed of through the trap door only hours ago.
