TVTropes has taught me that fanfic disclaimers are nothing more than a useless tradition.
When she first noticed the back of the woman's head, her first thought was that it was her cousin. The question of when her cousin had decided to take up skateboarding didn't cross her mind. She skated half the distance between them before she saw the woman in profile. It wasn't her cousin.
But when she saw how scared, how angry the woman on the phone was, she couldn't just skate away. It was the same the same look her mother had on her face when Dear Old Dad showed up once to take her and her brother on an unexpected "vacation" out of the country. It was the same look she herself wore constantly the year her ex-boyfriend refused to accept "No."
So when the woman's expression flashed to one of panic and she bolted, she took it upon herself to stand in her place and see what she saw.
When she was grabbed roughly by the arm she was keyed up for a fight, only to find she was out-numbered and out-classed by some suits. She did the smart thing and retreated.
Oh, what the hell?
She turned around to face her self-appointed adversaries.
"She says 'Up Yours'."
