Tobias Kemp: Sample 01
Tobias stood there, transfixed by everything around him, still in disbelief that this one bookstore, let alone the entire shopping precinct, was hidden from him and thousands of others all this time. He thought of how he would never be able to shake knowing it would still be here after he left and returned to the part of the world he grew up with. The Muggle world, as they called it. Then a voice stirred his thoughts; a girl's voice.
"You've never been here before?"
Tobias blinked and turned to the source of the voice. A girl about his age stood beside him. She had a pleasant smile on her fair-skin face with light blue eyes. But it wasn't the face Tobias instantly took notice of. It was her white hair. How on earth was this possible? Even her eyebrows were white. It had to be magic, he thought to himself. It wasn't difficult for the girl to tell he was staring at it and giggled.
"I did it myself," she explained. "I used my mom's wand to change it before I got my own."
Tobias stumbled a little on words, "It... it looks pretty cool. It, uh...it makes you look like Storm."
The girl looked confused, yet somewhat amused by this statement. "A storm?"
"No. Storm," Tobias explained. "The comic book superhero. She has white hair, too."
"Oh..." The girl shrugged. "I've never heard of her."
Tobias felt his cheeks flush and quickly looked away. "Oh... Sorry."
The girl giggled again. "It's okay. Are you...Muggle-born?"
Tobias nodded. "Yeah, I think that's what I'm called."
"Where are your mom and dad?"
"Um, they're somewhere in the store, looking for my school books for my first year at Bartholomew Boar's."
The girl beamed at him. "You're starting this year, too? So am I! I'm really excited for it. I'm Lorelei. Lorelei Jarog."
Now Tobias was confused. "Lora...?"
"Lora-lie," she explained, tilting her head from one side to the other with each half.
Tobias nodded and smiled. "Gotcha...Lorelei. I've never heard that name before. It's kind of cool."
Lorelei laughed. "Thanks, I guess. What's your name?"
"Oh, uh, Tobias Kemp." Then he held out his hand to which Lorelei shook. From somewhere in the middle of the store, the two of them heard her name being called. She turned and waved to them, then looked back at Tobias.
"That's my parents. I've got to go. Want to sit together on the train?"
"What train?"
"The train to the school!"
"Oh! Um...yeah, yeah I'd like that."
Lorelei smiled. "Okay, I'll see you later then. It was nice to meet you, Tobias!"
Tobias watched as she trotted away to her mother and father and smile slowly curled his mouth. Perhaps making new friends here would not be so bad after all.
