No one knows how it started. Well, EXACTLY started. It started when some muggle hikers some how managed to find Hogwarts. No one knows how they did. They reported what they found, and police arrived to investigate.
Things would have gone smoothly, but the Whomping Willow ruined everthing. Some policemen were nearby, and the Whomping Willow attacked them. Afterwards, wizards were considered enemies, and thus began the war.
One would think the wizards would win. After all, they had magic. So it was a surprise to everyone when wizards and witches all over the globe were being defeated. Some how, the muggle armies were winning.
Finally, the Ministy of Magic offered to negotiate with muggle governments. After a month of talking, it was decided. Muggles and wizards would cease fighting and join together.
Of course, the war, which lasted 8 years, left lasting effects. Towns were demolished and never rebuilt. Many places popular among wizards were ruined.
But, they worked together.
There has not been a war of any kind since.
