Shades of Gold

Dean remembers playing in the leaves. His mom laughing and holding Sammy as Dean slowly spread the piled leaves across the yard. The colors were pretty and they crunched under his feet, irresistible. He remembers picking out one to keep; yellow, just like her hair.

Later, when Sam's old enough to play in the leaves, Dean doesn't join in. Instead he stands off to the side, smiling as Sam plays. He remembers how their mom smiled and when asked, he tries to explain about one perfect golden leaf.

And for a little while, fall is more than fire and sadness.
