misery between the lines

"You shouldn't sleep on the stairs..."

She would have jumped at his voice, so near to her skin, if she hadn't heard his trail of clunking steps. He was crouched on the landing just above her chosen step, his breath a light rasp at her exposed neck. She shivered from the faint vibration and let herself sag back into the wall.

"And you shouldn't drag your feet."

He moved to sit behind her, his bent legs at either side of her body. Running his hands from her lower back to her shoulders, she let herself relax against his chest. "Be more...attentive."

"Show up more often, I might be more attentive."

Tugging at her shirt collar, he pushed a hand beneath the loose fabric, fingers sliding against her shoulder and collarbone. "You're all sweaty."

"It's hot. And you, Sasuke-kun, were..." She stopped, biting her lip as she squirmed against his descending touch. When she moved to pull his hand away from her chest, he pulled out of her shirt with a laugh. "You were...you were late. Like thirty damn minutes late."

Wrapping his arms around her neck, he leaned forward and kissed her jawline."Check your phone. I'm only fifteen minutes late."

She traced slow paths along his arms, hands stopping finally to rest at his wrists. "Still...you let me fall asleep here."

"You left that night and I thought it was over."

"It never ends so easily. You should know. It takes so much more than slammed doors and bodies."

"You shouldn't forgive me so easily."

"I never said I forgave you. For anything."

"It wasn't that bad."

"It healed."

Dipping his head and nipping at her ear, he said, "That's all you'll say?"

"I haven't seen you in weeks."

"You wouldn't talk to me."

"I couldn't find you, Sasuke."

"You ignored my calls."

"I couldn't talk to you."

"You could've."

"I didn't want to."

"You're my--"

Easily unlocking his hold with a yank at his wrists, she stood. He watched with narrowed eyes as she took a single step lower before turning to face him. She stared back, one hand grasping the railing tight when she told him, "I'm not. Fuck, I'm not yours."

Her green eyes flicked away from his when he gave her a vacant smile. Sighing at the dropped connection, he reached a hand out and gave a small playful tug at the hem of her uniform skirt.

"Sakura..."

A quick laugh from him was enough for her to take another cautious step down. He told her with the same smile, "You are," and got to his feet. "You've already told me, and nothing's changed."

Her response was a scoff, followed by a dismissive shake of her head. Unperturbed, he moved down to stand level with her.

"No?"

She looked up to meet steady black eyes. "You told me--" His simple glare, and the tight hand at her shoulder, stopped her short.

"Why would you do that..." Squeezing tighter, he pushed her backwards. Hissing from the pain, she grabbed his hand with both of hers as she nearly slipped off the step. "Why meet me here if you're not mine?"

She turned her face away, her hands pulling for release. "I wanted your answer."

His expression hardened for an instant, letting her go quick. "You still go so fucking far..."

She glanced at him, catching the look of disgust on his pale face before he turned away. Ignoring the ache of her shoulder, she knelt to gather her bag, listening to his ascending steps.

"...for nothing."
