True Happiness

~ A short one-shot relating to episode 5 of series 3 - spoilers ~

Their voices were fading, it was rather nice really. She was so tired, as she drifted away she felt more and more peaceful. She was sad to abandon Tom but she knew he could be strong. It was like someone was shutting a massive door. Slowly stopping all the sound so she could sleep at last - she felt as if she'd never been so happy, so relaxed.

As she drifted off to sleep she felt painless - any dull aches eradicated, no lingering pain from her so recent childbirth. She didn't dwell on it simply accepted it and appreciated it.

She felt weightless, completely free. She vaguely remembered talking to her eldest sister, Mary, about God. About her beliefs. She looked around her and saw what it was she was looking for before she knew what it was she was looking for. She ran - no glided - towards it. It grew closer and closer but was still a long way off. She felt as though she'd been searching for this get whole life. But only now was it within her grasp. She stopped suddenly. She closed her eyes and thought of Tom, her new child, Edith, Mary, Mama, Papa, Matthew, Dr Clarkson, Mrs Crawley, Mrs Hughes, Mr Carson, Mrs Patmore, Daisy, Gwen, Miss O'Brien, Thomas, Anna, Bates, everyone downstairs, everyone who she'd worked with at the hospital and on her training course. She opened her eyes again. The object was right in front of her - as if it always had been. It shone bright, blindingly bright. She wanted to look away but couldn't tear her eyes away from it. She was so glad to be here. She DID miss everyone but she could cope without them with this one thing. True Happiness.
