Luxray sat beside Sven, his tail waving from side to side, as they waited for the two newest Top Rangers to arrive. They hadn't been waiting for long when the pair arrived.

Luxray and Sven stood to greet them and Luxray looked over the pair with critical eyes. They both looked to be around 16; one was a boy and the other a girl.

Luxray could smell the boy's anxiety and excitement. The girl was calm, acting as if she had spent her life down here in these tunnels.

The boy's partner was a Buizel and the girl's, a Munchlax. Luxray wouldn't have thought a Munchlax would be the girl's chosen partner, what with her quiet confidence and calm but the Munchlax and the girl obviously had a bond.

Sven shook their hands and introduced himself. The boy called himself Keith and the girl called herself Kate. Luxray didn't see much point in human names. Pokémon had nicknames that they were called by, but only by a select few. If you didn't know what another Luxray was called, you just called them Luxray; it was as simple as that.

There were a lot of human things that Luxray didn't get. Like mating or 'girlfriends', for example. With many Pokémon, selecting a mate was easy. If two males wanted the same female, they had a battle; the winner would get the female. The pair would then stay mated for around a year. With humans though, it was so much more complicated. For example, Sven liked Wendy. As in really liked. Yet he wouldn't do anything about it. He acted as if they were mere friends. Sven acted normal around Wendy and flirted with other females, buying them presents, that sort of stuff, never getting too involved. Luxray knew that Sven was afraid. Being a ranger was dangerous; being a Top ranger was even more dangerous. Sven didn't want to leave a girlfriend or wife behind if anything fatal happened to him while on a mission.

Luxray still thought it was stupid though, why wouldn't he just tell her?

Luxray turned his attention to the pair of Pokémon in front of him, watching them closely. The Buizel didn't seem comfortable underground at all, and his eyes darted nervously about. The Munchlax didn't seem to mind the darkness and stale air, instead choosing to stare at Luxray.

It was a bit unnerving. The Munchlax just stood there; watching Luxray intently, with wide, unblinking eyes. When Luxray moved slightly, Munchlax's eyes moved too. Luxray tried to ignore the Pokémon but couldn't stop himself from meeting Munchlax's gaze.

The eye contact was broken when Kate moved away and Munchlax went with her. Luxray felt himself relax. He wouldn't admit it aloud, but that Munchlax scared him.

Just a little.
