Police Station
The jacket was too big for him
The cap covered his eyes determinedly
In the right pocket was a wallet with pictures
In the left pocket was a badge and keys
He studied the badge with hands and eyes
He went through the wallet thoroughly
His eyes lingered on the woman and child
His finger touched her necklace
Drops fell onto the plastic coating the picture
He wailed through gritted teeth but loud enough to hear
Calling the cop to him without a word
The man, slightly older than his father
His glasses cool and mustache soft
Arms strong and protective
He carried him along to his desk
Cluttered with pens and papers and files
Offered warm chocolate and crisp doughnuts
Promised to be there for him
To solve the case, to find the perpetrator
He descended from hysteria to sniffles
And laughed when he was retrieved
Telling the two men about his time there
The butler smiling sadly
The cop fidgeting with a faint smile
The boy fell to a rest in the black and white clad caretaker's arms.
