Alice POV. New Moon- After Bella's party
"Jasper? Jasper!" I ran through the woods searching for the love of my existence. The love who was extremely disappointed in himself at the moment, ashamed to be anywhere near me or our family. I scanned through visions, trying to see where he could be, but it was no use. Predicting my way of finding him, he wasn't making any decisions on where he was headed. He was just running. Running away from his weakness, his mistake, the shame he felt. I had to find him, comfort him in some way. He had to know that none of this was his fault. No one expected Bella to cut herself, and no one was prepared for the smell. The delicious smell of her blood, it was almost floral… Focus, I told myself. Find Jasper, he needs you.
After what seemed like hours, but was really only a few minutes, I found him. He had given up the chase, and was sitting with his head in his hands under a rotting tree. I stopped a few yards away from him, watching him with tender eyes. He spoke to me without looking up.
"Why are you here? You should be ashamed of me. Everyone should."
I ran over to him, wrapping my small arms around his lean frame, kissing the top of his blonde head. "No one blames you, Jazz. It isn't anybody's fault who we are. Bella isn't mad at you in the least. It was all just an accident."
"An accident? I attacked her, Alice. Bella! Someone who's like my sister. How could I? I'm a disgrace to everything the Cullen's believe in," he shook his head.
"No, never," I whispered. We sat still for a while, I in his lap, holding him, his head against my shoulder. This was my job, he was what I existed for. I helped him through his hard times, and he helped me through mine. Those dark days when I was haunted by my past, vaguely remembering human years in the asylum, he would hold me and stroke my hair, whispering comforting words to me. Other times, whenever I surrendered to the visions, he would be right there the whole time, watching me. From the day I met Jasper on, I was never alone.
We sat there for an hour or two in comforting silence. Jasper was calming down a little; I no longer felt his extreme disappointment and pain seeping through the atmosphere to me. After a while Edward showed up to talk with Jasper. Immediately I was hit with a vision. My mouth formed an 'O' in horror, and I gasped.
"Edward, no! This won't fix anything!" I pleaded, but he just shook his head.
"Alice, it's for the best. We're too dangerous for her. I can't do this to her anymore," his topaz eyes were clouded with pain, but sure of his decision.
"Edward, please. She's my best friend. She needs us, I need her," I whispered frantically.
"We can't be selfish anymore, Alice. It's for the best," he said again, still shaking his head.
Still seated in the damp ground, Jasper finally looked up. "Alice, you have to let go. Edward's right. We must leave."
Why were they so intent on ruining my happiness? Didn't they know this wouldn't fix anything? Bella could not survive with out Edward. This would crush her, destroy her. I couldn't take it anymore. With a hurt glare at both of them, the people I was closest to, I ran off in the opposite direction of the house. They couldn't do this, I wouldn't let them.
