Eeeehhhh.... couldn't finish the original one-shot for the second theme either... so I clipped out the important part and here it is.

My god, I haven't updated in a while.

Theme: Battle. Translation: soldiers. Further translations: war (lol isn't it supposed to be the other way around?). Even further: love. Is a battlefield. Harhar.

Drabble-fic thing. Bleh. I'm kind of disappointed in myself.

This is AU, by the way. :D

Disclaimer applies. I don't own DGM. Wish I did, but alas, I don't. That says "Katsura Hoshino", not "K**** ******". My name doesn't have that many letters, anyway. 8D

Enjoy.

Allen hated smiling.

He hated smiling, especially at Kanda.

Hated with all of his life, because it meant that he was soft and weak. To smile during a time of crisis, to smile when he was beat up and bloody, it showed that he was too naïve and optimistic.

But that was fine, because Kanda hated those kinds of people.

Allen could smile from his heart and Kanda could hate him, he wouldn't have to scowl or act mean and harsh, because he hated doing that too.

He could smile because he was happy, and Kanda would hate him.

He could smile because they finished their assignment with no injuries, and Kanda would hate him.

He could smile just because he wanted to smile, and Kanda would definitely hate him, because Kanda hated it when he smiled for no reason.

He could smile, so this battle wouldn't seem too dreary to everyone around him.

He could smile, because it wouldn't make a difference in the world.

He could smile because Kanda hated him, and Kanda would live, because…

…Kanda wouldn't shove Allen out of the way of a cannonball like Mana did.

…Kanda wouldn't attempt to transfuse all of his blood like Linali did.

…Kanda wouldn't rush to save Allen with a tampered gun like Komui did.

…Kanda wouldn't try and sneak into enemy territory to find out the person who killed Mana like Lavi did.

…Kanda wouldn't try to take on a whole army to protect him like so many others had done.

..Because Kanda hated him.

Kanda was the ideal soldier for this battle, someone who wouldn't fall in love with Allen at first sight, someone who would fight on regardless of those dropping dead around him, someone who could take a bullet to the arm and still use the same arm to beat up the person who shot him.

Because Kanda had no emotions besides anger and hate.

And Allen could love Kanda without the fear of being loved back, the fear of having another loved one die.

So Allen smiled, even if he hated it, even if it'd get him killed someday.

He smiled.
