Lord's Death's POV
I sighed slightly, shoulders hunched as I cradled my cup of tea in my oversized hand. Sometimes, I wished return to the days when I didn't have to look like a cartoon character or talk in this silly animated voice. I knew that some people believed that I was strange; even my own son was sometimes embarrassed by me.
In truth, some days I missed being feared by humans and being able to come and go as I pleased. Sipping my tea thoughtfully, I contemplated what would've happened if I hadn't started the DWMA.
My thoughts were interrupted by a loud ringing. Setting my cup of tea back on the coffee table, I stood up and glided to my full length mirror to see who was contacting me. My question was answered as the face of a familiar girl with pigtails and large green eyes appeared on the mirror's surface.
"Hiya, Maka! Good to see ya! How are things going?" I asked cheerfully.
Maka's eyes flashed proudly as I could see her trying to hold back a smile to uphold a professional appearance. It was scary how much she reminded me of her mother.
"Soul and I just collected our 99th Kishin soul, sir. We're about the go after the witch."
"Really, that's great. I guess I don't really have to tell you how important the witch soul is, though."
"Yeah, we learned that from experience," I heard a male voice call out. Maka visibly shuddered at the memory of her failed conquest for a witch soul a few years ago, forcing me to confiscate all the souls they had collected so far and make them start over.
"Well, I'm sure you'll do fine this time. I wish you two good luck!" I said, flashing a piece sign. And I really meant it; they had matured a great deal over the years and their fighting styles had improved significantly. With luck, this might actually be the day that Maka achieves her goal to make Soul my Death Scthye.
Maka shifted from foot to foot, anxious to get started tracking down the witch. "Thank you Lord Death. We won't let you down." She was about to sign off, but I stopped her.
"Maka!"
"Yes, sir?"
"Be careful," I said. She blinked rapidly at my sudden change to a serious tone, then smiled.
"We will, sir."
I nodded, satisfied. "Okie dokie, then! Bye bye!" I said, waving my hand farewell until her image faded from the mirror.
I smiled from behind my mask, remembering why I did it all. Why I gave up my freedom and endured criticisms for my appearance and such. It was all because of these amazing kids like Maka and Soul. Watching them learn and grow and fight evil in my name gave me joy, even if I was just watching it from my mirror.
As I walked back over to my coffee table and picked up my cup of tea again, I sighed, but this time in contentment. Yep, this is why I did it all. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
I always like Lord Death's character and felt like he did have a serious side that needed to be heard. So, read, review, and leave comments telling me what you think!
