This is a drabble that occured to me when I was rewatching Merlin, I was trying to think up an ending for Myrlinna and thought of this instead.
Uther can see Arthur's mother in his sons eyes and it terrifys him.
From the battlements, Uther Pendragon king of Camelot watches his son training in the courtyard below. He looks so much like Uther when he was a young man, fights like him, but that is where the similarity ends.
His eyes are exactly the same shade of blue as her eyes. The same wish for fairness that she had had. The same defiance of him when it suited her, the same refusual to follow orders he did not agree with, the same stubborness and arrogance... And maybe somewhere deep down although Uther prays not, the same gifts. Arthur is far more like his mother than his father.
Uther see's Arthur's mother in his son's blue eyes, yet Igraine's eyes were brown. Igraine never defied him even when she disagreed. Igraine was a perfectly obedient wife and he had loved Igraine but she was barren.
Which is why his attention wandered to her. His oldest and most loyal friend. Then they were like two sides of the same coin. The child would be Igraine's not hers that was the promise she made.
Save the child looks like her and Uther realises Arthur will never be Igraine's child. But he pretends.
Until Igraine died a few days after Arthur's birth. Uther blames her.
She leaves him their child and runs.
Yet when she returns to seek revenge upon Uther for his betrayal, for blaming her for Igraine's death. She also reminds him that Arthur is her son too. Not Igraine's. She laughs and tells Uther she may one day tell Arthur the truth.
When she dies, Uther is relieved so relieved tha Arthur will never know the truth he does not go looking for the sorceror that killed her.
But even in death she haunts him.
Uther looks at Arthur and he see's her reflection laughing at him and realises how obvious it is when you look, that he is indeed her son too.
Nimueh.
