It isn't until a month after Yahiko's death, and the subsequent defeat of Hanzo that Konan finds out she's pregnant. Of course she knows that a quick procedure could free her of any future responsibility towards this potential child but she can't bring herself to follow through with it. She doesn't have it in her to rid the world of the only piece of Yahiko left.
Nagato is uncharacteristically emotional when Konan tells him of her pregnancy; he actually cries and gives her a crushing embrace through Yahiko's body.
The following months of pregnancy are riddled with both good and bad days. The good days include her looking in the mirror one night before bed and realizing that she's starting to show. Another was while she was relaxing in Pain's office while he worked and suddenly feeling the baby kick for the first time. She's so shocked that she drops the book she's reading and gasps, "Nagato!"
He's by her side instantly, grabbing her hand and asking her what's wrong. Instead of answering him, she pushes his hand down to rest on the swell of her stomach. They're both tense and quiet for a moment, waiting. The baby doesn't make them wait long, however, and gives a nice hard kick right underneath where Nagato's hand is resting. His ringed eyes widen in shock before he makes Yahiko's face break out into a wide grin.
The bad days include when the baby gets big enough to put pressure against her main chakra coils, rendering her effectively useless for the following months until the baby is born. This leaves her incapable of performing her duties to the people of Ame. Pain happily fills in where she cannot and the citizens all wait with anticipation for their God and his angel to have their baby.
The worst day is when she wakes up late one morning in her sixth month of pregnancy and realizes she's in labor. The sheets tangled around her legs are stained pink with the combination of water and blood. How she slept through the contractions she'll never know, but she pulls herself up and tries to call for Nagato. Konan collapses back down when she realizes he's out performing her duties for her throughout the village today.
"Zetsu!" it takes a moment but eventually the bi-colored man emerges from the floor. He gives her a wicked grin when he sees the state she's in.
"Oh, is it time for the baby?", he asks.
Konan grunts in pain as another powerful contraction squeezes her insides, "Yes! Go get Pain and tell him I'm in labor, hurry!"
He leaves with a chuckle that she chooses to ignore and she takes the time to remove her sleep shorts and underwear.
By the time Pain and the midwife burst through her bedroom door, she's already beginning to crown. The midwife barks orders at the Pain paths that come in shortly after them and they follow them without hesitation. The deva path comes to her side, though, and takes her hand into his, murmuring words of encouragement.
It only takes four good pushes before the wail of baby cuts through the room.
"Lord Pain, would you like to cut the cord?" the midwife asks over the screams of the baby. The deva path looks to Konan who gives him a nod with a small smile. He cuts the cord and while the midwife cleans up the infant he turns back to Konan.
"It's a little girl," he says taking her hand once more and using his other to brush her sweaty hair out of her face.
The midwife returns quickly with an impossibly small bundle that's still squeaking in distress and hands the baby over to Konan. She takes her new baby and her breath leaves her in a rush when she looks down at her.
A premature birth has left the baby terribly tiny and Konan is sure that the baby could fit in Pain's palm easily. Thankfully, chakra ensures that the baby is mostly healthy despite the premature birth.
It's hard to distinguish whose features she got when she's still red and her face is all scrunched up from her cries.
When Konan starts fumbling with the hem of her sleep shirt, Pain leans her forward and helps her pull her shirt up so she can try breast-feeding. It takes the baby a few attempts but eventually she latches on and instinctively starts to feed.
The different paths quickly clean her up and change the sheets while the baby eats and the deva path doesn't leave her side, "What are you going to name her?"
Her baby mesmerizes Konan so it takes all of her willpower to look away from her to the deva path, "I'm not sure yet, any ideas?"
Pain hums quietly in thought while running a gentle finger over the baby's pastel blue hair, "How about Yumi?"
Konan looks back down at her daughter trying to place the name to her little features, "Yumi-chan."
They spend the remainder of the day with the baby trying out different ideas but Konan thinks that Pain was right; her baby looks like a Yumi.
Word spreads through the village quickly of Yumi's birth and the citizens organize a festival in celebration for the new baby. It's during the event that Pain's voice booms over the crowd gathered in the streets and he tells them that they have been blessed with a beautiful daughter and that her name is Yumi.
The people cheer and the village now has two holidays to celebrate: the defeat of Hanzo and the birth of God's daughter.
….
"Yumi-chan," Konan coos down at the wiggling baby who gurgles in response. They're in Pain's office while he takes a brief break to eat lunch and he's moved around to the other side of the desk where Konan is at so that he can watch her play with their child.
"She has Yahiko's eyes," he comments and if Konan notices that his words are laced with sorrow, she doesn't say anything.
"Yeah, she does," the baby in question looks up at Pain with curious brown eyes, "She also has his ears."
He actually chuckles at that and when the baby turns her head to the side he can confirm that Konan is correct, Yumi has Yahiko's ears.
"The midwife says it will be a while before its safe to take her outside since she's so fragile," Konan remarks idly.
"Ah, is the baby sick?" the two parents' heads snap to look at the far corner of the office where Zetsu is emerging.
"What do you need, Zetsu?" Pain asks moving to stand in front of Konan and the baby.
"Madara-sama is on his way," Zetsu has completely stepped into the room now and isn't even attempting to hide his curiosity in the baby as he tilts his head to see around Pain. Sure enough, a vortex opens up and the masked man calling himself Uchiha Madara steps through. Konan tucks Yumi close to her body, not liking having this many threats this close to her baby.
Yumi lets out a whine of irritation at being moved and Madara is stepping around Pain to get a look at the baby, "Oh, it's so small."
"Madara-san, this is my daughter, Yumi," Pain introduces while giving the mask man a glare that could melt steel.
Madara plucks Yumi from Konan's arms and starts rocking her in his own, "No rinnegan, I see. What a shame."
The parents of the baby tense but keep their mouths shut and Madara continues, "She'll be a fine kunoichi none the less, especially with your lineage."
With that final statement, he hands Yumi back to Konan and the young mother looks a bit pale. Pain is pointedly directing his killing intent at the masked man who is just brushing it off.
Konan leaves quickly and quietly to return to her living quarters and she nearly lets out a sob with how distressing that interaction with Madara had been. The Uchiha could have easily killed Yumi and Pain and Konan would have been helpless to stop him.
Yumi is wiggling happily and making little noises, completely oblivious to the danger that she just faced and Konan clutches her just a little bit tighter.
