She shouldn't have brought them. Sure, she'd never conquered any foe without their help- and she was certain that each one of them could take care of themselves. But some battles were too big, too dangerous. This one was too big, too dangerous.

Blasts of energy coming from the spirit portal sent everyone in the former Republic City tumbling every four or five minutes. Korra's enemy was just beyond the portal in the Spirit World, and she just had to get in there and bring him back, and then the spirit portal would go back to normal. Her enemies came one after the other now that technology could be used to their advantage, though she'd never had any shortage of opponents. The world had no shortage of usurpers trying to take things into their own hands. That much could be proven by Amon, Tarrlok, Zaheer, Kuvira and the multitude that came after them. So when Team Avatar offered their help, she accepted, as usual.

But the moment that Asami didn't dodge a blast in time, Korra's attention swerved. She saw a third of Asami's mecha suit be blown off, and Asami dropped out of it a moment later. Korra fought the gust of power releasing from the portal to land on the edge of a nearby building. Asami was falling at an incredible speed down a several story ruin, unconscious and unable to activate her parachute.

Korra's heart stopped.

She heard Mako yell something behind her, but she didn't hear it as she jumped from the edge and dived after Asami. It seemed like she was years away from her, even as she used airbending to jettison her forward. The wind whipped at her face but she couldn't close her eyes. With each passing moment, they soared past countless stories, but she seemed to only get inches closer to Asami. She blinked away tears that didn't gather just because of the gust.

Just as Asami reached the fourth floor, a blast of energy caught Korra off guard and slammed into her chest. Korra cried out, being thrown away from Asami, her body trembling with burning pain. Then she made an inevitable call- she went into the spirit state, and made what must have appeared to Mako and Bolin like a tornado to propel her forward. Korra rocketed towards Asami.

Third floor. Second floor. First floor...

Just as it seemed they were about to crash onto the ground, Korra reached out for Asami's foot- leg- anything that might belong to Asami and draw her closer. She grabbed her ankle, pulled the wakening Asami towards her, and slammed at the concrete below them with a gust of air. Korra curled herself around Asami and landed roughly a few feet away, the two rolling with a multitude of grunts and groans. Finally, when they stopped moving, Asami and Korra, clutching each other, opened their eyes.

Korra was first to lift herself up, and Asami noticed she looked pretty battered. Korra pulled Asami's onto her lap and started looking her over for any serious injuries. "You saved me," Asami said, her green eyes staring up at Korra's blues, full of wonder and awe.

The hardened Avatar's face softened with a smile. "Why wouldn't I?"

Asami's brows wrinkled. "Well.. saving the world is more important," she said.

Korra's smile vanished, replaced with a look of seriousness that Asami wasn't used to seeing.

"Asami," she said. "A world without you isn't worth saving." Then her smile returned.
