"One hundred fifty-one…. One hundred fifty-two…" Rapunzel counted with every brush stroke. Sometimes counting made it go faster. She brushed and brushed, zoned out into her own little place of hair brushing. There was a rushing gust of wind, and a window blew open. Rapunzel jumped slightly, nearly falling off the beam, as she heard a voice.
"Counting again, Princess?" Jack grinned, perching himself on the beam. Rapunzel frowned, brushing her hair again. She was nearly finished.
"I told you not to call me that, Jack. I'm not a princess. And yes, counting. It breaks the silence." She nodded. "Definitely glad you're here to help that though." She smiled, looking over at him to see him nearly tangled up in her locks. She giggled, moving down to brush a new section of her hair.
"Eh, just came to check on you. I know how lonely you get." He shrugged, untangling himself and just grabbing onto a handful as he sat down properly.
"I still have my mother, Jack. And Pascal." She furrowed her eyebrows.
"Your mother's, well…. your mother. And Pascal's a lizard."
"Chameleon." Rapunzel corrected.
"Right." He glanced up at the little guy; he was sleeping. "Chameleon. But, come on, Rapunzel, it's got to get boring sometimes!" He groaned.
"Don't insult my mother! And I'm fine, I've said so!" She huffed. She sure did love her friend, but sometimes he was so pushy. She definitely knew he could easily get her to see the floating lights, but she didn't want to risk it. Her mother would be furious. Plus, he always had to go bring winter somewhere. That was always his excuse.
"Alright, Princess, if you say so…" He held his hands up in defense.
"Jaaackk." She frowned.
"Sorry!" He rolled his eyes.
"I don't know why you even call me that."
"It's just a nickname."
Rapunzel stared at him for a second, eyebrows furrowed. She bit her lip, pondering a question. "Hmm… Um, Jack?" She cocked her head to the side slightly.
"Yeah?" He answered, leaning back against the wall.
"Could you, uh… make it snow? In here?" She looked at him hopefully. Jack sighed, shaking his head.
"I would, Punz, but if your mother came back early, it'd be one heck of a mess. I saw her on my way over, too. She should be home soon."
Rapunzel sighed, exasperatedly, leaning her head on the beam to her right. She looked down at her brush. "Oh well…" She said, beginning to brush her hair again. "Someday, though? Please?" She begged, looking over at him. But he wasn't sitting there anymore. She was about to call out his name, when she heard the familiar; "Raapunzeel, let down your haaaair."
Rapunzel groaned, "Jack…." she muttered, brushing out the last few inches of her hair quickly before hopping down from her beam. "Coming, mother!" she called back, gathering her hair and throwing it over the hook and out the window. She sighed as she pulled her mother up. If she couldn't see the floating lights, she'd at least play in the snow just once. If only Jack would stop being so stubborn. Him and his silly excuses.
