"Let's dig an enormous castle!" cried Moon-Face. "Then we can all sit on the top of it when the sea comes in."

"We can't," said Silky, suddenly looking sad.

"Why not?" cried Jo in surprise. "Isn't this the land of do-as-you-please?"

V glanced over at the child-- girl-- young woman sleeping in his bed. Or rather her bed now. This had been the third time that he had read her to sleep in the past week. Same story every time. He wondered if Enid Blyton had intended for her stories to induce sleep so easily. Or if they were merely meant to rid frightened children of the monsters in their dreams.

He closed the book and placed it quietly on the bedside table near the lamp, which he turned off as he stood up. Then, pulling the blanket just a little closer around Evey's shoulders, he excused himself from her room and shut the door.
