"That poor man died because of me," Lou said pacing and wringing her hands in worry.
"And now Lambert is setting up the Kid," spoke Noah with defeat in his voice.
"What are we going to do," Lou questioned.
"The judge will be here tomorrow he could release him," Buck stated as Lou put her hand on his knee.
"Lambert won't wait that long! We got to get the Kid out by tonight." Jimmy said rubbing his chin, trying to come up with a plan.
"How many men are guarding him," Noah stressed.
"Lambert and his deputy," Jimmy replied.
"Four against two I'll take those odds," Noah said happily.
"They start shooting the Kid could get hurt," Buck said, thinking everything through. "We need a diversion."
"I know something that might work," Lou announced to the group as she looked out the window.
"Well let's hear it, Lou," Noah said noticing her not so thrilled attitude.
"What if it's just the guard, while Lambert's out? Jimmy you could go in pretending you forgot something. That would give Buck and Noah the surprise on the guard. Then you get Kid out."
"We could also let their horses free in the stable so it would take a while to get new mounts," Buck added.
"That's a good plan, Lou. But I don't see Lambert leaving the jail tonight." Jimmy spoke as they all missed that Lou was not with them.
"Wait a minute, Lou where will you be," asked Noah?
Lou sighed, "I'm the distraction. I get Lambert to think he's coming up to my hotel room for a good time and I hold him in here at gunpoint."
"Unta, Unta, No," Jimmy quickly got up and started pacing.
"What? You don't think that I could convince Lambert to come up to my hotel room, Jimmy?"
Jimmy turned around, colliding right into Lou. "No darling, I have no doubt you could get Lambert up here;" remembering her flirtation at the bar the other day. "But weren't you the one who said when we left Sweetwater 'Lambert wasn't someone you want to mess with'."
"Then what's the problem Jimmy, if you think I can get Lambert up here. Oh, I see. You think I can't pull off my end and hold Lambert at gunpoint."
"No, I think Lou would have no problem holding Lambert here, but you're not Lou right now you are Louise. And whether you like to admit it or not there's a difference," Jimmy looked into Lou big doe brown eyes.
"You know what, Jimmy? I was capable of fending off Lambert the other night dressed as a woman," Lou retaliated.
"When?" Jimmy demanded wanting to kill Lambert already for trying.
"The first night we got here. I was walking back from our meeting at the livery."
"No. It's not that I don't think you could keep Lambert here. I'm sure Kid would rather not have you be in harm's way," Jimmy retorted, trying another tactic.
"Like I said before I can do whatever I please, whether Kid likes it or not," Lou said angrily.
"Lou," Buck said softly trying to bring down Lou's temper. "We, as in all of us, do not want to see anything happen to you. How are you planning on leaving here? He's not going to let you walk away."
"I was planning on knocking him out with the butt of my gun," Lou said a little calmer. "If you have another plan then I'll listen to it, but it's getting late, my break is over, and I have to deliver Lambert's dinner."
The boys all looked at one another. "It's the only plan we got Lou," Jimmy said placing his hand on her shoulder.
"Fine. I'll meet you all in Rolling Hills in the morning," Lou said grabbing her shawl.
"I'm not the one telling Kid," Jimmy said to Buck and Noah.
"Oh, boys? Can you fill my tub with cold water before you leave," Lou said as she was leaving.
