Safe and Sound
I do not own Hetalia. Based on Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift, but I couldn't use the lyrics because of copyright so...
It was unusually quiet in the Nordic household. Iceland was tucked in, asleep in his room, Norway was downstairs reading, Denmark was surprisingly sober and both Sweden and Finland were not in the house-which was probably why it was so quiet.
Norway sighed, turning a page of his book. Both Denmark and Sweden had been arguing a lot lately and not only had they dragged himself and Finland onto opposing sides. But their arguing had been waking Iceland up and because Iceland was his responsibility Norway had to put him back to bed, leaving both the brothers tired and slightly cranky.
But it seemed the peace would not lasts within that moment Sweden knocked the door down and started shouting. Not only did this make Denmark shout back but it also woke up Iceland in a fit of tears.
Norway sighed once more and stood up, ignoring the arguing pair and heading straight for his little brothers room. It was at the far end of the corridor next to Norway's, (obviously) but also quite close to Finland because if Iceland did wake up in the night it would only be one of those two who would get up to comfort him.
Pushing open the door with his brothers flag on. Norway immediately made his way over to the crib and picked the baby up, being careful not to knock his head against the Norse God mobile Sweden had made him.
"Shush, it's okay Iceland. Big brothers here."
Rocking him against his chest Norway tried to calm Iceland down. "It's okay, I'll look after you. I won't let you get hurt."
This had been one of Norway's main worries. He wasn't stupid, he knew the fighting between Denmark and Sweden would turn into war and when it did he would be forced to pick a side. But what would happen to Iceland? Being a child Iceland wouldn't be much help, but he just couldn't leave him alone.
He just couldn't.
"I won't leave you Iceland. You'll be safe."
To further calm Iceland down Norway started humming a lullaby, it normally worked when Iceland was upset, and it might even calm his own nerves.
Norway sighed again for the third time that night, he knew he was probably over reacting but Iceland was too young for being involved in war. Especially when the said war was tearing their family apart.
With all his over thinking Norway didn't even notice when Iceland stopped crying and fell back asleep. Finishing the song Norway kissed his brothers forehead and laid him back down in the crib.
It had been a few days after that night when Sweden had finally had enough and left with Finland, declaring war with Denmark at the same time. But even though the Nordic household was quieter Norway was still stressed. Not only did he have to look after Iceland but now when he came home hurt, (which was most nights) he had to look after Denmark too.
Though at the moment it was just the two brothers in the house and Norway was comforting a crying Iceland with the same lullaby he had been a few days ago.
"It's okay brother dear, I won't let them drag you into this too."
Norway stared out of the window in the direction of the on-going battle. Occasionally you would hear a cannon shot in the distance, but the rest of the fight was blocked by woods. Norway knew this but he couldn't help himself to look for a glance of blonde, gravity defying hair. Just so he knew Denmark was alright.
Giving up he paid more attention to his brother, who had just started crying again after another cannon fire startled him.
"It's okay, it's just a cannon. You'll be in a war someday, when your bigger. You'll win of course, but for now," Norway turned to the window again. "Let's just hope Denmark comes home safely."
Hope you enjoyed this, if so please leave a review : )
