"Name: 'Ani Sol,' spoken zero times in the past hour." The eye-screen read, adding nothing to her face rank.
"Great!" Ani muttered, clicking out of her feed and shutting off her eye-screen with her eye-mouse. While her pretty friend was partying in New Pretty Town, she was stuck here in Uglyville. Ever since the mind-rain, they don't add the lesions to your brain. You'd think everyone would be 'united and happy' but no, you still can't go past the river unless you're sixteen and you paid for the operation. And to make it worse, her parents were totally missing; they didn't let her get anything but an eye-screen, eye-mouse and skintenna.
Which made her face rank a bogus 400,362.
Ping! Ani was startled out of her thoughts by the alert of a message. Which could only have been sent by Mandi, her partying friend.
"Hey, Mandi-la," Ani said, flicking open the call. Mandi, who she had know all her life, looked much different that when she was ugly. It was always hard to look at her without feeling jealous, especially since Ani had at least three months worth of baby-sitting and community service, not to mention all 100's on her tests, in order to have enough for the operation.
"Oh, finally you answered!" Mandi shouted above the music. "Wait, I can't see you. Turn on your eye-screen."
"Fine, but you don't want to see my ugliness." Ani replied, turning on the low-tech wall-screen on the wall of her Ugly dorm room.
"There we go," Mandi-la said, big, reflective eyes singling Ani out from the rest of the world, so it was only her, only her in the attention and adoration of a Pretty. "How bogus, Ani-la! Everyone knows that Pretties thought they were better because of the lesions."
"Whatever, what did you call me for?"
"I wanted to call my best friend, what's wrong with that?"
"Come on, Mandi-la! That's a totally bogus explanation," Ani retorted. "your totally ugly best friend, at that!"
"Fine, it's boring here. Not even close to as bubbly as partying used to be, back as Pretty-heads. I mean, I didn't feel any different when I couldn't thing as clearly as possible."
"Look, Mandi-la! You know you're bubbly, but calling me because you were bored really was bogus."
"Fine, I'll get back to the party. See ya, Ani-la!" Mandi pouted and the screen flickered and went black. She was in New Pretty Town, where she was happy and at a party! How could it be bogus if that was something everyone wanted to do?
Being an Ugly really sucked sometimes, especially if all of you friends were gone and having the times of their lives.
