Pairing- Nate/Tess
Nate Black was used to life in the background.
It was typical, of course, that Shane got everything. He always did. Shane was the one who landed the role of lead singer of Connect 3. Shane was the one who found the girl of his dreams. Shane was the one all the girls were in love with.
Meanwhile, Nate just stood by, strummed his guitar, making sure Jason didn't trip on his own shoelace.
He wasn't bitter. Shane was his best friend, after all. Nate was just…jealous. He wanted his moment in the sun. He wanted to be the superstar for a day.
It was early in the morning. Everybody was still sleeping in their cabins. Even so, Nate sat by the lake, guitar in hand.
He was frustrated. As desperately as he wanted to make a melody and lyrics, nothing came out.
Suddenly, the bushes rustled, startling Nate, and causing him to almost drop his guitar.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! I didn't know anyone else was out here this late!" A blonde, skinny girl emerged from the bushels.
"It's okay," Nate replied, trying to regain his composure, "I'm alright."
The girl's eyes widened as she realized who he was. "Hey, you're Nate Black, right?"
Nate chuckled. "Yep, that would be me."
"Can I sit with you?"
Her question surprised him. Usually girls who approached him asked "Do you have Shane's number?" or "You're that guitar player, right?"
"Sure," he countered, "Go ahead."
Tess sat down on the ground with him. "This is my secret spot, too. I come here when I'm angry or upset. Something got you down, Nate?"
Nate sighed heavily. He might as well tell her. She was smart, and bound to figure it out anyway.
"I'm tired of being second fiddle. I hate that I do a ton of the work, and never get any credit. And I'm sick of Shane getting all the attention."
Tess stayed silent for a moment. "Truthfully, you've always been my favorite. In the band, of course. I kept trying to get close to Shane because I wanted to get to know you."
He looked doubtingly at her. "Really?"
"Well, duh," Tess responded, "I mean, look at you. You're cute, you play guitar, and you aren't afraid to show your feelings. Sounds like a winner to me."
Nate was stunned. Not only was this girl having a real conversation with him, but she liked him. "Wait, so why did you come here?"
"Camp is over. My mom is gone again, going somewhere without me. Mitchie is better than me, and I lost Final Jam. And on top of it all, everyone thinks I'm the most evil person in the world because I framed her of stealing my bracelet."
Nate's mouth stood slightly agape. She had just bared her soul to him after knowing him for ten minutes. "Wow."
"Yeah."
They sat in silence for a few minutes before Tess spoke again.
"I have to go. Everybody is starting to get up."
Nate cleared his throat awkwardly. "Oh, okay."
Before she stood up, she kissed him on the cheek, and leaned close to his ear. "If it's any consolation, I think you totally deserve to be first fiddle."
As she walked away, he picked up his guitar.
His inspiration was back.
A/N: Wow, that was really bad. And, okay. I know the pairing was weird. It just kind of came out. And Tess is a bit OOC. I kind of wanted to show a different side of her. But it's been 59695468094 years since I posted something.
