She stood in front of the mirror hearing the dull chimes of the music behind her. She still had her shoes, skirt and blouse on. At first she'd thought about how to get the dress over her head. She carefully ran her hands over her hair. It was bunched up, hanging in strands and decorated with pearls. Then she realised something was wrong. She stared at the dress, luminous and white. Then she gasped. She had to leave. She prised open the window. It was two storey's down. Thankfully she was an X-man. She leapt gracefully out the window, landing carefully on her feet. Then she bolted off. True to her name, the Rogue fled.
-xXx-
'Rogue!'
'John!'
She hadn't even noticed him sitting opposite her. She was at her favourite diner, in her favourite booth in the corner. She hadn't noticed him sitting there.
'What are you doing here?' he asked.
'I need to think. I'll move…'
'No, stay. I could use some company.'
'Thanks.'
'Anytime.'
'How you been, Johnny?'
'Rogue, John I can handle, but Johnny.'
'Ok, ok. But you should call me by my real name.'
'You never told me your real name.'
'You weren't present for the announcement.'
'Look…'
'Marie.'
'Marie. It's beautiful.'
'I've missed you.'
'Really?'
'Yeah, no more jerks left in the mansion.
'Hey.'
She giggled. He crossed his arms dramatically.
'You were always a mean girl.' He muttered.
'I take that as a compliment.'
'I have to go. Things to do. You still live at the mansion?'
'I have nowhere to go.'
'Oh. You can stay with me. I have my own apartment.
'Thanks it'll only be a few days.'
They stood up. He threw down some change and walked out, with her following. As they stepped outside she linked her arm with his.
'So why did you leave?' he whispered.
'I left, temporarily.'
'Why?'
'Next question.'
'Are you still with him?'
'Yes. New subject.'
'Pick one.'
'You.'
'Ok. I'm done blowing things up. Work two jobs, nothing big, but they pay the rent. And when I'm alone, which is all the time, I think about you. That enough?'
'For now.'
'We're here by the way.'
She looked away from his face. It was a small apartment, but cosy none the less.
'You can sleep on the couch. My bed isn't exactly neat…'
'It's fine. Thanks again.'
'Anything for you.'
-xXx-
She woke later than usual. It was eleven when she finally climbed in the shower. Having no other clothes she was forced to wear the same ones. She carefully folded the t-shirt he had leant her to sleep and put it on the couch. She took out her cell and turned it on.
'Good morning.'
'Hey.'
'So did you sleep well?'
'Mm-hm.' She mumbled, preoccupied by the 42 messages on her phone.
'Toast?'
'No thanks…oh!'
Her cell started to ring.
'Hello?'
'Marie, where are you?'
'Bobby…I…well. I'm sorry.'
She cut him off and turned her cell off.
'What was that about?'
'I ran out. I couldn't marry him.'
'You were marrying…him?'
'I have to go.'
'Stay.'
'I don't belong here. What was I thinking?'
'Rogue, please. I can't lose you. I love you.'
'I'm so sorry, Johnny.'
She ran out as fast as she could. She could hear him calling her name but she just kept running.
-xXx-
She looked at the dress. It was white, lined with red roses. It fitted perfectly. He walked in and wrapped his arms around her, his lips tickling her ear.
'I love you.'
'I love you too, John.'
'Any second thoughts?'
She looked at their reflection.
'No, we were meant to be.'
