Please come back home...Please come back to us...Please come back to me...
He could hear the ghosts of their cries. As he stared at the blank abyss below him, sitting on a tree branch with the ground below several stories away. The white sky that blended with the white ground, the only color of nature was the brown and green from the great tree he now guards
Such is the fate of all Fafnir Knights when their time comes or so the story goes.
"Ready to continue the climb Izuku?" said a strong friendly voice.
Izuku looked up to see his senior, another Fafnir Knight who had completed his task and is now here. He was dressed just like Izuku, White clothes with a gray robe, he had tan skin and white hair with dark red eyes, his large frame gave an air of power; yet he was friendly and kind.
Izuku gave his fellow Fafnir Knight with sad lonely look.
"You miss your companions as well don't you?" He said to Izuku upon seeing that familiar look of longing.
"I miss mine as well."
"I'm scared...I left them there...Some hero I was..."
"You are a Fafnir Knight Izuku, one who has completed their task in ridding evil from the land."
"Then why I do feel so unfinished?"
"You want to return?"
"Could I?"
"Should you?"
Izuku went silent.
"I can hear them...I can hear her..."
"Ah...The one who made you a Fafnir Knight? I see...I can still remember the name of mine...Her name was Arianna."
"Ochako..."
"There are many who are meant to fight on, Izuku, Fafnir Knights that have come before us and many others who will come after. If you truly believe that your mission is not done, then take the plunge back down to the earth. However if you are unable to return then I must await for you here in order to continue my ascent." He said solemnly.
Izuku stared at his companion. He knew that his new friend had been waiting for a long time for another Fafnir Knight to help him climb the great tree they now guarded. Their goal was to reach the crown of the tree and find the paradise that awaited them. Would he be that selfish to prevent his friend from his own ascent.
"I know what your are thinking my friend."
Izuku jumped in surprise seeing the wide smile in his friend's face.
"You are a very selfless person Izuku." he said as he joined Izuku sitting down on the tree branch, his legs hanging down to the great drop below.
"I have waited for a long time. I would not mind waiting longer my friend if it was put your mind at ease."
Izuku stared at his friend, with a nod he got up and offered him his hand.
"Let's go."
"Are you sure?"
"To be honest...I'm not. But I know that if I truly want to take the chance, then I'll do it just before we make to the top. So even if I fail. I won't make you wait."
He stared at Izuku mouth agape and started to laugh hard. He finished with a sigh and took Izuku's hand.
"Very well my friend."
As the two walked to the tree massive trunk to begin the next leg of their climb. Unknown to the duo, two more people had began their climb up the great tree. They had been lead by a failed Fafnir Knight.
One of the heiress of a duchy with long rich dark purple hair and the other a hero-in-training with short-brown hair. The two ladies were here to find their lost knights.
Time was short they needed to move quickly.
"Izuku, I'm coming."
Spring in Musutafu park could easily be described as a paradise for the children at play. Sunny, warm and with a light wind blowing cool air every so often; the flowers returning to bloom after a rather cold and unforgiving winter season. The laughter of children can be heard throughout the park be it with the children using the playground equipment or exploring the small forest nearby. Most children loved this time of year.
Among the children at play was a small squad of four young boys none older than five. They were dubbed the members of the Bakugou agency that patrolled the park to keep villains at bay much to smiles of several adults at the park with even the occasional local Pro-Hero coming by for a "Progress report."
Each of the boys dreamed of joining the ranks of the greatest of Pro-Heroes, however two boys in particular such as the "leader" of the squad Katsuki Bakugou and his friend Izuku Midoriya had already started their plans to go to UA the school with the most famous Hero Course in the country.
UA the school that taught some of the most famous Pro-Heroes in the world including their idol The World's Symbol of Peace All Might. In case of young Izuku was also a matter of family pride as well.
Izuku's parents had both attended UA during their youth. His father Hisashi Midoriya aka The Pro-Hero Draco Knight met his mother Inko who had been his business management student liaison.
The legacy that UA had on the Midoriya family left Izuku feeling like there wasn't anywhere else he could go but there and the sooner he was ready the better his chances would be.
"Okay guys! Break time! Meet back in here in twenty minutes!" Katsuki calling out to his
'Squad' after pausing to take a look his wristwatch.
"Right!" The other three boys answered in unison breaking off to go meet their respective parents. Izuku had to scan the park before he spotted his mother sitting at a bench nearby waiting for him speaking to another woman with chest-nut brown hair. Upon walking up to his mother he waited politely not wanting to interrupt them in the middle of their conversation.
"Ah, is that so Tenma? That is interesting- Oh I'm sorry my son is here-" Inko said turning to her son. "Everything okay Izuku?"
"Yes mom, I'm fine. Can I please have my lunch now?" Izuku asked. Inko looked at time on her phone and was surprised on how the time had flown.
"Of course honey" she smiled as she began to run through the bag on her right until she found and grabbed the small All Might! themed bento box she bought earlier for Izuku.
As Izuku ate, Tenma the woman his mother was speaking with earlier had gotten up to look for her daughter.
Inko wasn't too worried for her as the park was known be very safe with local pros checking up often in their patrols making sure that they could step in at any moment be it a villain or a child with an out of control quirk. As Izuku finished up his bento box, he thanked his mother as he got ready to join his friends.
"Remember Izuku we have to go home soon okay?" she said as he walked way.
"Okay!" he answered back as he waved.
As Izuku returned to his friends, he saw Katsuki alone looking annoyed.
"Kacchan!" Izuku called out to get his attention.
"Hey...Ikun." he sighed.
"What's wrong?"
"There been change of plans, dad says we have to go home." he answered clearly disappointed.
"Aw...but we can play again later right?" Izuku smiled sadly disappointingly since the other two boys only played with Izuku because of Katsuki.
"Yeah, but it'll probably won't be until next weekend, but I'll still see ya at school tomorrow." he answered as he began to walk away.
"Okay then...bye Kacchan!" Izuku waving at his departing friend who just meet with his father.
Izuku began to think for a moment on what he should do next as he was still good to play here at the park for at least another hour. Sure he could just let is mother know that he wanted to go home early, until however when an idea suddenly came to mind.
There were parts of the park that the squad at yet to start patrolling in the deeper parts of the small park forest.
If he scouted he could find a new patrol route for next weekend and maybe he could take the lead as didn't just want to be Katsuki's sidekick forever.
He wanted to be like his father who owned his own Agency known as The Drake's Den. If he was quick enough he could scout a new route and then go home early.
'Right! Time to explore!' He thought to himself with a new spring to his step.
Izuku began walking along side of the forest beginning to go off the path. He had been through here once before, but that was with Katsuki's squad.
They never ventured past this particular rock formation that was nearby the small river that Katsuki fallen into during their first visit here. Now filled with new determination Izuku as he approached the formation to use as the vantage point. Slowly climbing the rock formation careful as not to fall off or cut himself by accident with some of the more jagged edges of the rock.
"Ah!"
As he got to the top of the rock he swore he heard a noise that made him jump.
'A scream?'
He thought to himself going silent his ears perking up. He didn't hear anything at first, so he closed his eyes and even held his breath just to make sure we wasn't just hearing himself.
At last he heard it; some one was crying nearby from the sounds of it.
Armed with that knowledge Izuku jumped off the formation abandoning his previous plans as those cries could be that of someone who was hurt or lost nearby, someone who might need help. He began heading toward the source of the sobs and judging from the direction Izuku had a solid guess on what could have happened.
Izuku moved slowly through the bushes knowing the river was nearby. If one was not careful here they could be easy fall into it especially if you walked through one of the taller bushes that blocked the river from view.
Izuku found the edge where the river formed and began to scan up and down the shallow river when he spotted the source of the cries.
'Bingo.'
Someone a small child like himself had indeed fallen in just like he had suspected; he climbed down carefully into the river avoiding the rocks and and fallen branches that plague the climb downward, once he was there he began to walk to up the child and as he got closer he realized it was a girl around his age.
It made Izuku nervous, Izuku was a naturally shy child, but when it came to girls? It always seemed to compound his nerves. It was Katsuki who always good with talking with anyone provided they didn't annoy or anger him; girls included. Izuku however wouldn't allow his nerves get the best of him here; not when there was one in need of help. After all how could Izuku ever hope to be a great hero if he couldn't talk to girls?
As Izuku approached he nervously offered his hand to her.
"Hh-hh-hi, a-a-a-re you right? Are you hurt?" Izuku stuttered voice cracking.
The girl slowly looked up at him; it made Izuku go just a bit red. She was pretty with chest-nut brown hair in a bob-cut with two bangs of hair slightly longer, chocolate brown eyes, a round-face with a permanent light blush on her cheeks wearing a white dress with pink accents that was wet and stained with mud from the river bed. Her eyes were red and puffy with flesh tears still running down her cheeks, finally she nodded and spoke.
"I-i-i-got lo-lo-lost and fell." She stuttered as well mixing in with her sobs. "I-i-i hurt m-my leg." motioning her to right leg with splattering of bruises ranging from light to a rather dark one in the middle that bled a little.
Izuku could see she was in pain and it only made him grow more determined to help as he felt a strange warming sensation in his chest. His hand stopped shaking and got a bit closer to the young girl.
"I can I help you?" Izuku asked calmly finding his courage as he did his best to replicate his idol's trademarked heroic smile.
The girl finally seemed to be able to stop crying and even managed giggle a little bit when she saw his face. She went to reach for his hand firmly holding it with her pinkie finger extended outward to prevent her quirk from activating by accident.
'soft!'
Izuku slowly pulled her up to her feet until her put weight on her bruised leg and fell forward. Izuku grabbed and held firmly to stop her from falling further however in doing so he accidentally pulled her into a hug. The courage Izuku had managed to draw was quickly disappearing as he not ready for this amount of physical contact that some strangers could find rude which made his face turn red.
"I'm sorry" she said
It was enough to snap himself out of embarrassment.
"It's okay, hey do you have a quirk?" he asked mentally berating himself for not asking earlier. She could have quirk that could help out their situation and maybe it could be among the first new entries of 'Hero Analysis for the Future!' notebooks that he recently started wanted to start while he waited for his quirk to finally manifest .
"I do it's called Zero Gravity, I can make things lighter when I touch them all five of fingers" She answered her mood seemed to improve with that question as she showed Izuku the tiny pink bumps on her small hands.
'Too cute'
"That's amazing!" Izuku answered catching the girl by surprise since no one else but her parents had ever reacted to her quirk like that.
"Can you make yourself lighter?" he asked.
Not knowing that at that very moment his father Hisashi had felt a chill run down his spine while he was eating lunch with some of his sidekicks felling strangely uncharivious and guilty for a moment as he looked around nervously with a mouth full of ramen noodles hanging from his mouth.
"I can...but it makes feel sick after awhile, but if it helps I can do it." she mumbled dreading that nausea that it came with before asking Izuku. "What about you? Do you have quirk?"
"I do, but I don't know what it is yet..."
"Yet?"
"Yeah, the doctor told me and my mom that I do have a quirk from the tests they did on me. But they're just not sure it what it is or how it works yet. And don't worry about using your quirk. I don't want you to feel sick."
Izuku answered getting a bit more frustrated with himself. At last not knowing what else to do he slowly managed to turn his body around and squatted down and offered the girl climb on his back. She was caught off guard but once she realized what he was doing she climbed on circling her arms once his neck without protest.
He slowly stood up was began walking toward the edge with the intention to try climbing it. When it proved too difficult since he needed to use both his hands his frustration only grew worse wishing for his father's quirk to just appear know it could even make him strong enough to jump all the way up.
Even if he had just his mother's quirk -a mild form of telekinesis- could have been enough to help get the girl up to the out of the river without having her to climb up herself, but instead he was here basically quirkless unable to do much.
He didn't want to leave her alone there, but he also didn't want her to get sick. The feeling in his chest was getting heavier as his frustration grew.
'Come on Izuku!' yelled to himself. 'she needs your help' as he stood by the edge.
It was very frustrating on how such a normally an easy task for Izuku to climb out of the river was now proving impossible in his current state, he was only five-year old child and there is only so much physical strength one could have at that age with having your hands full carrying another.
"You can leave me to find someone...I don't mind" the girl said as she could see his face expressing his internal infighting.
"No! I'm not doing that."Izuku said firmly being stubborn.
"It's ok!" she cried. She was happy that someone cared enough to help her but it also didn't stop her from feeling bad seeing that he was getting frustrated trying to do a good thing.
Izuku was almost about to give up when he realized something was off. That feeling in his chest...it was different. It was warm and gentle, but there was a real weight to it...Izuku felt it as he closed his eyes.
"Wait what's going on?!" The girl screamed in surprise.
Izuku's eyes snapped...he was glowing...It got brighter spreading a warming sensation throughout his body and suddenly without warning Izuku blacked out with moments fading in and out.
He could feel a breeze in the air how? Was he flying or did he jump?
He could a weight on his neck? The girl was she ok?
Falling feeling nearly weightless as if he falling from beyond the clouds? Was he dying?
'Izuku!'
Mom?
'Thank you. My Knight.' he heard her say.
Knight?
And finally complete silence.
The Fafnir Knight
To say Inko was worried was an understatement for what she had born witness to a few hours ago. She was sure it wasn't too bad, but Izuku falling unconscious was what set off her alarm bells. While riding with the ambulance she called her husband's agency to let him know what had happened thankfully Ryuko picked up and let her now that Hisashi was on his way.
Once they arrived and Izuku was settled in a room with the hospital staff performing tests. Inko finally allowed herself to breathe.
"Honey!" Inko heard her husband's voice.
She turned to see Hisashi Midoriya in his makeshift civilian attire. A very worn out poorly ironed white dress shirt with a poorly tied black tie, black slacks and unpolished brown dress shoes Inko could swear has to belong to one of Hisashi's sidekicks. Messy thick black wavy hair all over the place that nearly covered his bright golden eyes and a light shadow of stubble showing was proof that Hisashi had rushed it. But he was here and that is all that mattered at the moment.
"Oh good Hisashi!" she cried embracing the panicked man rather tightly.
"It's okay..." he breathed. "What happened?"
"I think Izuku finally got his quirk...but after he used it...he fell unconscious.."
"What was it?" Hisashi asked eyes wide at the news hoping it was his.
Despite the circumstances. Hisashi hoped it was his as it would quickly explain why Izuku blacked out.
"It was yours honey." she answered. "It looked a little different but it was Dragon shift dear."
"YES!" Hisashi yelled out thrilled that his son got his quirk, ideas of near future already forming in his head.
"Honey! We're in a hospital!" She whispered loudly at him looking around the room.
The hospital staff suddenly paused looking at Hisashi like he was crazy. After a quick apology he started up speaking to Inko.
"I'm sorry honey, but trust me, if this is the case; then I already know what happened. If it really was Izuku using dragon shift; then he most likely just wasn't ready for it and drained his stamina." Hisashi explained. "Now...Was he fully armored or only partially armored?"
"Hisashi!"
"What?!"
"Are you sure...that he's going to be alright?"
"Yep! I mean you should have seen what happened to me the first time. I was out for two days! Hahaha—Ow!"
Inko smacked the backside of her husband's head.
"How could you be so casual about it?!" Inko asked frustrated with her husbands antics.
"Because I lived through it, powerful quirks tend to do stuff like that. I mean seriously can only imagine what life was like for someone like All Might when he was kid? With that insane amount of power?"
Inko sighed but smiled
'Ever the fanboy right Hisashi?'
"Mister and Missus Midoriya?" voice called out causing Inko and Hisashi to turn to the person in question. A young nurse with cat ears wearing scrubs waved at them. "He's awake now; Doctor Nishi said everything looked normal and the most likely culprit was just exhaustion. Some food, bed rest and he should be good to go. Now I got to go get some paperwork for you to fill out and we should be able to discharge him today if you want."
"Thank you" Inko and Hisashi said together bowing; relieved at the update.
As the couple walked in they could see Izuku on the bed with small hospital tablet most likely reading up the latest hero news updates. Hearing the door he looked up and smiled upon seeing his parents.
"Mom, dad!" he called out as his parents took their seats next to his bedside.
"Hey my boy, you feelin' better?" Hisashi asked hoping that doctor hadn't broken news about his quirk first.
"Yeah I am but...Mom? Said Izuku turning to his mother who had been finally able relax seeing Izuku able to answer but the look of worry on his face made her tense up.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Is that girl ok?"
Hisashi couldn't help but grin, happy of his son's selfless nature. Ryuko had informed him that Izuku had been carrying a young injured girl when they found him.
"Oh! Yes sweetie, she's fine. You remember the lady I was speaking with before lunch? That was her mother Tenma. She got checkout here earlier and is completely fine once she got her wounds cleaned up and bandaged, I think they left to get her some mochi.." Inko said with a smile that allowed Izuku to relax. Seeing the opportunity at hand Hisashi took this chance to break the news.
"Soooo...Izuku, it looks like we finally found out what your quirk is." He said resisting the urge to grin wider.
Izuku shot right back up eyes beaming and alert.
"REALLY!? WHAT IS IT?!" he said excitedly almost bouncing in his bed.
Hisashi knew how long Izuku had waited to here this, but he wanted to make him wait just a second longer.
"Ohh...I'm not one-hundred percent sure but I believe your mother does." Hisashi teased putting Inko on the spot.
Izuku's head snapped to his mother at a speed that spooked both his parents making them sweat drop a little.
Inko coughed for a moment and finally answered.
"For the short time it that I was able to see it in use and could finally stop panicking,I can say it was definitely Dragon Shift, you are your father's son after all Izuku." she smiled secretly a bit disappointed it wasn't her quirk he inherited but happy for her son none the less, especially since she knew that Izuku wanted to a Pro-Hero like his father and their idol. Dragon Shift would serve him far better than her telekinesis.
And with that Hisashi broke out his biggest smile as he hugged his son overjoyed at the news that he had gotten his quirk.
Izuku was extremely excited as well knowing how cool his father's "Armored" form was until he suddenly realized something was off.
"But why can't I remember anything?" Izuku asked sadly. Disappointed he couldn't remember such an important moment in his life.
"Ah that is an easy one to explain son. You just weren't ready for it yet. Heck I could barely remember my first time shifting into my armor and that was by accident and I wound up asleep for two days afterward so I'd say you're doing a whole a lot better than me."
Hisashi laughed scratching the back of his head remembering fondly of his childhood. This made Izuku feel a bit better know that he wasn't alone in his experience.
His father continued
"As you get older and practice with it, you'll build up your stamina. And if you want can start training like I always promised."
Izuku was blown away has he absorbed his father's words, finally training!
His plans to get into UA can finally move forward.
Seeing his son's face Hisashi knew the answer but asked anyway.
"So is that a yes?"
"YES!" Izuku answered with glee without a moment of hesitation.
" Very well,Izuku then from here on out. You are now my page in training when I think you're ready for UA I'll deemed worthy to be called my squire. And finally once you graduate from school I'll deem you worthy as a Knight proper."
Hisashi had dreamed of this moment for ages ever since he learned that Inko was pregnant with Izuku years ago. The inner nerd in him that had a small passion for middle ages Europe was never far from Draco Knight.
Inko giggled "I think you may be a bit late for that Hisashi."
"Eh?"
Inko began to gush as she recounted.
"The young girl Izuku was helping, OH HISASHI YOU SHOULD'VE SEEN IT...The way they held each other. When she explained what had happened and with she finished with 'He shined as he turned into My Knight to help me."
Izuku blushed hard not ready to hear that but it made him feel happy like a real hero.
'Her Knight'
Hisashi in turn at first had a mild look of disappointment on his face before it turned into a smiled that was even bigger than before and gave a hearty laugh.
"Damn! Knighted by a princess already!? You couldn't wait for your old man Izuku?Hahaha!" He said with faux expression of feeling hurt."That is adorable. Did you get her name?" He finally finished facing Inko.
"Ochako I believe? I was speaking with her mother Tenma...Tenma Uraraka I believe it was? I do know she's from out of town and was only here with her husband on a local business trip." It a cute name isn't it? Ochako? Tea Girl."
Hisashi pondered for a moment upon hearing that familiar name.
'Uraraka?'
It took a moment until Hisashi remember him.
"Ah...I wonder if she's related Kenji?"
Kenji Uraraka was one of the Construction Damage Assessment Mangers (CDAM's for short) for Pro-Heroes. A tough, but fair man Kenji had help getting Hisashi out of a jam from paying damages after one particularly nasty fight with a villain. It was because of this that saved Hisashi's record during the next review phase of the semester and secured his placement as Rank Sixteen up from Rank Twenty-One.
"I think I owe him a drink" Hisashi laughing as he remembered.
"Izuku since you did such a good job today...how about when we get home how about I make your favorite?" Inko asked in a singsong voice
Oh boy as if today couldn't get any better for Izuku that day. First he finally gotten his quirk and it was awesome; next he got to save a pretty girl like a real hero and she even called him 'Her Knight'
and now he was getting to eat Katsudon made by his mother. The only thing that could have made today better was if he got to meet All Might who would offer a sidekick position exclusively for him.
Yes that would be perfection for Izuku.
These are the days that Izuku would remember fondly during his most trying days to come...Yes.
These were the better days before everything changed.
Author's Commentary
Okay, that new opening scene.
That will not pay off for a very long time, but there is a reason why it I placed it here.
This scene was originally supposed to be there from the very beginning, but at the time had not decided on how certain events where going to play out yet. Now that those details are set, I am more confident in starting with it.
You can think of these rewrites being the "Director's Cut" of the story, due being unsure of certain details or my sleep deprivation that plagued me into making some really dumb decisions and making certain mistakes that would have caused both continuity errors and plot holes.
I know that Yin if you are reading this. Yes those two are exactly who you think they are and yes that was Yggdrasil.
Now, if you are reading this, but have not read the first chapter of the prequel series. Draco Knight that should be live now, before these rewrites were released.
Like I stated before, the prequel is not required reading, but will give you insight and answer some questions that will not be directly answered in this story.
It stars Izuku's father Hisashi during his time as a Pro-Hero. (More details in the story itself.)
History of this chapter. Oh god, I always hate admitting this.
This is now the fourth version of this chapter.
The first was...a horrible mistake. Simply put, I uploaded an early draft of Chapter one that was super bare bones and had been only placed in the Doc Manager just to test out the formatting and when it came time to actually list the chapter, I used the wrong document and didn't realize until hours later and reading my first comment by Abovetail no less. Yeah finding out that hot mess and my scramble to replace it with the proper version still haunts me to this day.
The Third version was just a heavy edit to fix up, grammar and few issues with structure.
And now we have this version with the new scene, additional fixes and touch ups.
Fun facts
Ochako's Parents.
For English dub watchers (If you're a hater, I don't care) Ochako is voiced by Luci Christian. (A personal favorite of mine)
Who did the voice for lead female character in one of my all time favorite Anime/Manga's School Rumble.
I decided to name Ochako's dad after Kenji Harima (Although I did plan originally planned to use this as Gunhead's name due to them having the same voice actor it wasn't going to be used in the end) and Ochako's mom after Tenma Tsukamoto (God I love that series and I loved that ship but it was sunk and abandoned)
For Hisashi's character, honestly my headcanon until proven otherwise is that Hisashi is basically a grown up Izuku and I wanted to express that here.
Now. I am a proud member of the Izuocha discord server and you can find me there from time to time, if you want to chat. I also want to express that I am open to all forms of criticisms and take it all with gusto to continue to improve my writing.
And I am also open to help and lend assistance with any help for other writers out there. I know I was helped a few out already and want to make sure to anyone that, this offer to open to you as well.
Reviews are my favorite form of appreciation.
That is all for now.
With Love -X
