I love you and I thought you loved me the same. But I was wrong. I can't do this anymore with you. Too much has changed between us. Don't look for me. I won't be staying here long. Goodbye Jace. Clary signed the note and brushed a tear away from her eyes before it could stain the paper. That was it. She was packed and ready to leave New York altogether. Her mom and Luke were dead. Isabelle and Simon were living in paradise somewhere. Alec and Magnus barely talked to her which left Jace and her alone at the Institute.
A month after her parents died (their wedding day) everything changed. Jace had become distant and even violent toward others. When Clary confronted him him stormed out. She found him at a bar kissing another girl. He didn't even see her when he and the girl floated over to a dark corner and started shedding clothes. He realized she was there when she tripped over her own feet and ran out. He caught her at the door.
"Clary," he said. "I-I don't know what happened. I didn't mean to-"
"No!" screamed Clary pushing him away. "Get away from me!"
"I'm so sorry." He put his hand on her freckled cheek and repositioned a strand of hair away from her eyes.
"Get away from me! Get away!" Small streams were leaking from her eyes. "They were my parents that died that night! Not yours! You don't have the right to be messed up! That is my right!"
"Let's just go back to the Institute and just relax."
"No!" screamed Clary. "I'm going back to the Institute to cool down. You can go to Hell for all I care!"
Clary ran out the door knowing Jace wouldn't follow. She pulled out her cell phone and dialed one of the first names in her contacts. "Alec!" she cried into the receiver. "Where are you?"
"I'm at Magnus' apartment. He wants to 'talk'."
"You have to go to the Hunter's Moon now. It's Jace. I need to to take care of him tonight. Just keep him away from the Institute."
"What's wrong? What did he do?"
"It doesn't matter. I have to go. Bye Alec. Tell Magnus I say thank you for everything."
"Clary-" she cut him off by pressing the end button on her cell.
And now we're back to the note. This wasn't the first time that Jace "slipped up". There had been some close calls with other girls but never had they almost had sex in a corner. It wasn't like they were married but he was supposed to be hers.
Goodbye Jace she thought as she tugged off the Morgenstern ring Jace had given her. She placed it on the piece of parchment and snatched up the luggage that she'd been packing for the last three hours. Alec was clearly doing his job. It was three a.m. and nobody was at the Institute. Now all there was to do was leave.
"Clary!" she heard someone shout from the outside. "Clary! I know you're here."
Clary's first thought was Jace. It had to be Jace right? But no, it was Magnus.
"Come on Clary!" sounded a new voice. Maya?
"What do you guys what!" screamed Clary not opening up the door for them. She felt so dry and empty that she thought she'd be out of tears by now. Apparently that wasn't the case.
"I saw your and Jace's at the bar. Werewolf hearing and all. I just wanted to make sure you're okay," said Maya.
"Am I okay?" asked Clary narrowing her eyes at the the young werewolf. "The love of my life just almost and may possibly be having sex with a stranger. A week ago he murdered a Downworlder who was serving him a steak because it didn't taste right. He's changed." She glared at the warlock. "And why are you here? To witness my heartbreak?"
"Alec told me not to let you do anything rash," he glanced at the suitcase in her hand packed with a stele, her sketchbook, a couple outfits, a few knives, and of course her precious witchlight stone that Jace gave to her the first time they kissed. Those were the good days. "And by the looks of it I'm failing at my job."
"You're going to have to come out sometime Clary, and we can wait all night. It's either that or we can wait until Alec brings Jace back," said Maya threateningly.
Clary pursed her lips in thought. She didn't want to hurt anyone, but she needed to get out. In a flash, she pulled out Heosphoros and held it at Maya's throat. "I'm sorry," she said slowly stepping out the door, "but I need to leave here-forever."
"Come on Love Muffin. You know that all it takes is a finger snap to make you drop that sword. Why do you want to leave so bad?"
Clary threw the sword up distracting the Downworlders for a few seconds and attempted to run, but Magnus caught her wrist. She used her last trick. "I'm pregnant."
His grip loosened on her wrist, and she pulled herself free. It was true so was pregnant. That was just another reason she had to leave. Not just for herself but for him or her. Whoever was inside of her couldn't have a self-destructive father and a barely competent mother. She was going to have this child and then she would probably have to give it up.
Chapter 2
Note to self Clary, she chastised herself, don't have sex with your boyfriend without protection. Sure there was a beautiful cave in a whole other world-literally-but was it worth it?
