My first Outlaw Star fanfic. I remember years ago watching a few episodes and forgetting about it. I have a soft spot for old Toonami anime like Tenchi, Sailor Moon, DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Rurouni Kenshin, and only watched this around 4 years ago, and was instantly smitten by it. There has never been another show as awesome in sci-fi as Outlaw Star. I remember surfing this archive and being disappointed by the lack of Hilda/Gene fics. I love the two of them together.
There were days, Gene Starwind, the new captain of the Outlaw Star, when he really hated remembering the past. He had many regrets throughout his twenty years of life, some bad, some good. Sure, he had many good things, like his best friend Jim Hawking by his side, and his newest friends.
However, none of them could overshadow the fact that he had lost two precious people to him, people he could never replace even if he wanted to:Hilda and his father. Hilda had taught him not to be afraid anymore of space and living his life. He was eternally grateful to her for showing him how to live again.
He had actually fallen for her, too, something he tried to ignore but eventually had to admit as the days passed by without her. He missed her cold nature. He only wished he had gotten to know more about the woman before her death, but then again Hilda had never really been a talkative person, so whatever secrets she had hidden died with her.
He knew this, however:he would not let the woman who had been the brightest star in his life down. He was going to become a great outlaw and overcome his fears and his past. This was how he would atone for failing to save the woman he had loved and learnt so much from.
