Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter or anything that you recognize in the story. I wish I did, I would be rolling in dough *sigh*
So, without further ado...
The Epic Love Story of James Potter and Lily Evans
"Go Lily! Take Harry and run!" James called to his wife. Lily immediately fled the room with her one-year-old son in her arms; not thinking of what she was leaving behind. Her home. Her true love.
Her life.
The door crashed open and James stood ready, wand pointed at Voldemort as the evil man swept into the room. James knew this was going to be his dying hour, and he prayed to Merlin that Lily and Harry were save.
"Avada Kedavra!" A cold voice snarled, as James stood, unprepared for the spell from his wandering train of thought. James watched helplessly as the green ball of deadly magic flew nearer and nearer.
Time stood still. His memories flashed before his eyes. His last lingering thought was of Lily holding baby Harry, smiling happily at him.
And then nothing.
Chapter 1: They Meet
A young, eleven-year-old James Potter ran confidently through the magical barrier with his parents onto the platform. The infamous platform nine and three quarters. The raven-haired boy couldn't believe it was finally time.
It wasn't as if he was caught by surprise though. No, in fact it was just the opposite. James had been planning this day for the past five years of his life.
He knew how everything was going to happen from this day, until he graduated when he was seventeen. He was a Gryffindor (obviously), he was already a skilled seeker (well, skilled for eleven), and coming from a magical family he already knew his fair share of spells.
Hogwarts was going to be perfect. He was sure of it.
"Promise to write me tomorrow and tell me all about your new friends!" his teary-eyed mother whimpered before throwing her arms around her only son.
"Mum! I'm not going to make any friends if you don't let go!" James whined, arms stiff by his sides, refusing to return the hug.
His mother reluctantly let go before tucking a lock of her greying hair behind her ear. "Alright, love. But you still must write!"
Rolling his eyes James agreed. He gave his dad a quick squeeze around the neck, smiled brilliantly at both of them, and then set off for his own compartment.
After he had traveled a good distance from his parents it became apparent to James that he had only planned for once he had arrived at Hogwarts. It quickly hit him that he had no one to sit with.
He chanced a glance back at his parents. His mother seemed ready to Accio her own bag and join him at Hogwarts to ensure he was safe.
That left only one option. He had to suck it up and choose a compartment or risk facing his over-protective mother.
With his mind made up James moved towards the back of the train and opened a random compartment.
And there she was.
Flowing auburn hair that reached just past the middle of her back. Piercing emerald eyes. Eyes that were turned towards him.
James stood there for a moment. Speechless.
It was as if his brain wasn't working. He couldn't hear anything. He couldn't see anything but her. He couldn't even move.
She blinked and her brows furrowed as she continued to stare. This had no effect on him but to make his stomach flip-flop nervously.
After another few moments passed a smile broke out on her face, lighting up the world. And she laughed. A tinkling laugh that flowed like honey through the compartment and into his ears.
This amazing laugh brought him back to his senses. He shook his head to clear the fog and then gathered his courage.
"Is anyone sitting there?" He pointed to the seat across from her. She shook her head, a small smile still gracing her lips.
A broad, blinding smile took over James' face in return. He couldn't control it. His mouth had a mind of it's own as it nearly consumed his entire face with his sudden onset of happiness to be accepted by this girl. This stranger.
That needed to be fixed.
"James. James Potter." Hand extended he looked hopefully at her.
She smiled once more and took his proffered hand. "Lily. Lily Evans."
James' smile widened immediately. He then placed his trunk under his seat and then faced her once more. After the introduction he didn't know what to say.
But he couldn't very well just stare at her… could he?
"Are you excited?" She asked. Thank Merlin.
"Undoubtedly," he grinned. But then faltered when she bit her lip and glanced out the window. "Nervous?"
"A bit." She sighed. "My family are all… what do you call them? Muggles?" James nodded encouragingly. "I read all the required books… and a few others. Just in case, you know. But I still feel like I'm unprepared."
This girl didn't breathe.
"You read all the books?" James gaped. Lily nodded worriedly.
"Do you think it will be enough?"
"Merlin, it's more than enough! I know a few spells from my family. But I've barely cracked any of the books open!"
Lily let out a long breath and smiled. She had an amazing smile.
She was going to be a Ravenclaw. He could feel it. She clearly had more brains than five of him. Maybe he could try for Ravenclaw too… NO! Gryffindor! That was the plan!
But then again…
The compartment door slammed open. A boy with dark black hair, like James' (but much more tame, of course) stood in the doorway with his trunk.
"That seat open?" He asked loudly. Lily stared in bewilderment, while James nodded his head. The boy grinned a large; sure to be heartbreaking, grin. "Fabulous!"
James liked him already.
"The name's Sirius. Sirius Black." He shook both their hands after putting away his trunk and throwing himself in the seat next to James.
The other two introduced themselves as well.
It didn't take long before a lanky, greasy haired boy returned to the compartment. His face instantly fell when he saw James and Sirius.
"Hi Sev!" Lily greeted happily, "James and Sirius needed a place to sit, so I told them they could stay here, is that alright?" She noticed his frown, but smiled up at him nonetheless.
He glanced uneasily at the boys, but nodded. He claimed the seat next to Lily and stared moodily at the two of them.
The compartment fell into an uncomfortable silence for a time before they were joined by a skinny boy with light brown hair named Remus Lupin, who chose the seat next to Sirius, immediately taking out a large tome and reading in silence.
At the last minute, a short, porky boy nabbed a seat next to Severus (as that was the only seat left). And their group was complete.
"So what houses are you to hoping to be in?" James asked excitedly once the train had begun to move and he grew tired of the silence.
"Slytherin is obviously the best house." Snape drawled.
James answered with his nose wrinkled in distaste, "Ugh, I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?" He directed this question at Sirius.
Studying his suddenly interesting hands Sirius responded, "My whole family's been in Slytherin."
"Blimey, and I thought you were all right!" James exclaimed causing the chubby boy to laugh at the obvious joke, with a little too much gusto, and Sirius to smile.
"Oh yeah? And where will you go then?" Severus challenged.
Holding up an imaginary sword James answered, "Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart!" He then shot Lily a big grin.
She stared back at him with wide eyes. She then looked to Severus and back and forth. "Are some houses better than others?" She asked nervously, "From what I gathered in Hogwarts: A History they are all equal in importance."
"They are. Except Hufflepuff… I don't know why they get a house," Remus interjected, causing the whole compartment to laugh.
"My uncle told me that Hufflepuffs are particularly good finders…" the chubby boy said. The laughs started once more, causing the boys' eyes to bug out widely. He seemed unable to grasp that people were laughing with him not at him.
"That was a good one… uhm…"
"Peter. Peter Pettigrew."
James nodded, grinned, then turned his attention back to Lily. "Personally, I see you becoming a Ravenclaw… having read all the books and all…"
"You read all the books?" Sirius gaped.
A (mostly) friendly discussion followed changing subjects from time to time. They often shared in laughter, except for Severus, who seemed unable to do anything except scowl at everyone, except Lily. His favorite targets being James and Sirius… but mostly James.
James couldn't help but agree full-heartedly. He didn't like this Snape person. He didn't like how big his nose was. He didn't like how greasy his hair was. He didn't like how black his eyes were. And he especially didn't like how close he and Lily Evans were.
