Sometimes I get so tired,
Just trying to find a place,
To lay my head
Bilbo Baggins looked across the plains of Erebor. Where Smaug had leeched the nourishment from the ground, blood rushed into the earth from the bodies of the fallen. But he didn't see it at all. All he saw was Fili and Kili, their bodies lying in the tomb together.
The stone masons had originally wanted to give them a tomb each, either side of their fallen uncle. But Bilbo refused to allow this. Gods forbid they even be laid to rest in separate rooms, let alone separated with a whole cavern between them. So they were kept together.
I look up to the sky,
I feel the warmest light,
Comfort me
He could almost imagine them now. Their laughter trickled through his head like the sweetest syrup and Bilbo had to fight tears that wanted to leak to the ground, begging to run down his face.
They were only boys. Bilbo gave a deep juttery sigh as he thought about it, realising they never had the chance to marry, have children and grow up.
It seemed silly now, the words 'grow up'. Because in the short time they were acquainted, Bilbo had seen them grow into strong young men and that, he told himself, was an honour to have witnessed.
I've seen the great heights,
Reminding me,
I'm alive,
And I don't wanna die,
I don't wanna waste,
Another day or night
His mind fluttered back to Thorin as he walked. The king that never was. As much as it pained him to realise it, Bilbo had to acknowledge that he was madly and impossibly in love with him. Nothing would've come of it. Bilbo knew that and he wasn't going to taunt himself with thoughts of what could have been. He only wanted to remember Thorins face but all he could call on were the painful memories of being cast away after the incident with the arkenstone and then the jolt in his stomach when he saw the king under the mountain slip away from the world.
I know there's something more,
Thank what we're living for
I see it in the stars
I feel it on the shore
Bilbo looked backwards at Erebor as he began the slow trek with Gandalf and the lone pony with his share of the treasure. Before the journey he would've been thrilled at the gold. Something with which he could gift his nieces and nephews, whom he doted on madly, something with which he could hide and bring out to remind himself of dragons and mountains and sword battles, something with which he could glance at and smile when memories came flooding back.
Now he just felt numb.
He took one last sorrowful glance back at the mountain.
"Farewell Thorin Oakenshield" he smiled sadly "And Fili and Kili"
He took a deep breath of air and reigned in his voice that wanted to crack
"May your memory never fade…"
I know there's something…
I know there's something
More…

Thanks for reading everybody. Please leave a review to let me know how I did
Did you cry?
Did you laugh?
Did you burp?
I NEED TO KNOW!
