Deform
Summary: Beings able to alter their shape at will kidnap Mathew and experiment on him to see how to turn humans into them by first trying it out on the Nations who are less fragile and don't die as easily.
Tony had argued for leaving Alfred alone but Mathew was easy enough for them to take after Alfred, so they did.
Their experiments cause Mathew pain so, despite their powers having made Mathew's memory fade from the minds around them, Alfred knew something was wrong and remembers about his twin after waking up from a nightmare that was really Mathew's reality in a cold sweat, and then Alfred knew the truth and suspected from one of Tony's past talks about their ability to manipulate memories about who may be behind his twin's and yes he remembered his twin now and the bond they'd always shared that allowed him to feel his pain. Why else do you think he'd never attacked his brother even in his land-hungry days…well besides at the height of his madness in the late 1700s and the war of 1812.
Until suddenly one day while with Arthur once he'd finally managed to convince the old fool to help him, even if he suspected that Arthur thought that HE was the daft one, suddenly he can't feel Mathew's pain anymore.
The experiments had succeeded, and Mathew's mind had been taken over and his body possessed by one of the aliens. He was now Deformed from being a Nation, and that connection to the land was no longer felt by him.
Alfred couldn't feel him from where their old peoples' boundaries had overlapped across their new country borders now. For the first time in millennia, he now felt cut off from the land he'd used to be a part of before England and the other colonizers came.
Mathew was now a new Deformer, with their hive mind-brain. No individuality left. He was the first of a new start of alien-human hybrids. The first to have his mind connected to the hive and his body become just a vessel for Tony's people to use.
And Alfred could never hope to get him back.
Entire civilizations had been lost to the hive before.
Tony, as the spy Alfred now knew him to be, had spoken haltingly of how his people had been lost and he was the last. Kept alive indefinitely with his mind intact…and Alfred had wondered at why he would say those exact words but now he knew why. Everyone else's minds had been taken and absorbed. And Alfred now had no brother.
Why didn't he listen to Tony when he'd seemed so scared and said that he could only throw off the others for a while, that he would try to keep them out, but that he needed to protect his brother?
The fogginess in his brain and Mathew's weird ghost-like-ness had started the next day…why did he have to chase after and try to welcome the aliens for so long? He'd been the one to let them get close to his brother. He'd led them right to him.
He'd gotten England to put up enough magic to keep them out and away from his people, but it didn't stop the fact that his most important person was now gone.
His brother was now gone.
He had no brother now.
