Just Another Friday Night

All characters belong to Tess Gerritsen. Just having some subtextual fun with 'em.

Jane and Maura sit at their usual booth sipping on beers at 8 p.m. on a Friday night. The Dirty Robber is half-full with customers and the usual night time bustle is just starting.

J: So, how's it going with you and Brock?

Maura suddenly becomes very interested in the menu lying on the table. This is an obvious ruse, as she would never in her life consume any of the high-caloric offerings.

J: Maura, you've really got to stop diagnosing your dates. What, did he have some freaky disease or something?

Jane laughs and takes a swig of her beer.

M: No…

Maura looks offended.

J: Well, what then? He was hot, foreign, and seemed mildly intelligent.

Maura ignores the question and looks out the window.

J: Maura! Spill already!

Maura huffs angrily.

M: The other night his mother called while I was over at his apartment.

J: Uh-oh.

Jane relaxes back into her booth seat preparing for an entertaining story. In her past dating history, there were several men whose mothers' approval she failed to meet. These relationships were short-lived.

M: He lied to her in front me. He told her that my name was Mina and that I was a 35 year old software engineer from Bombay.

J: Ha! You're kidding right?

Eager to end another conversation regarding the failures of her love life, Maura concludes her side of the conversation.

M: So, that's my love life. Let's talk about yours instead. No more Jorge?

Maura grins naughtily knowing this topic will be both highly entertaining for herself and at the same time piss off Jane.

J: No…No more Nurse Jorge.

She states clearly annoyed.

M: Aw, come on Jane, you said yourself he was sexy. Plus, he was supportive of your job and lifestyle.

J: Ugh, Maura just drop it. It's not like you've had such a great run with men this year either.

M: Really? You want to play this game?

The two women exchange playfully challenging looks. Jane gives in.

J: No, not really.

Maura smiles in victory.

J: So here we are again, just you and me on a Friday night. Alone.

M: So it seems.

Maura takes a swig of her beer, still surprised that she actually enjoys it.

J: So! Chinese and a movie at my place?

Jane's dour mood instantly evaporates with the idea.

M: Okay!

Maura is overly excited about the social invitation.

The two women settle their bill and exit the Dirty Robber. As they are walking to their cars…

J: You know, this being like the 100th time you're coming over to my place for a movie date and all…you should probably 'put out' tonight.

Maura stops in her tracks and looks around to check for bystanders.

M: Jane!

She whispers tersely.

J: What? It's like…a rule!

Maura gives her a reprimanding look with a seductive smile playing across her face. She tilts her head and replies,

M: No I don't believe it is a rule actually.

She turns on a heel and walks directly to her car, giving her friend an eyeful of how well her designer dress hugs her curves.

As her eyes rake up and down Maura's body, Jane utters under breath…

J: Well it damn well should be.
