Out the window
she watches
as the lights turned to dust.
The church bells echo
on empty air.
The steps of people
once there
but long since gone.
The light of the
sun's rays
now hidden away
in the eternal shade
that has fallen.
The chips of brick detached
from the streets
due to use
the sharp sound
of their landing
faded a thousand years ago.
All this she watched
through glass
as thin as her presence
far from the dead city below.
Never propping the window
open for fear of
the silent air.
After she watches all this
she turns from the glass
to fulfill her duty.
To live another day.
