Why.
Why is a good question.
The best question, Sephiroth thought as he paced the room, looking down at the crying children on the floor.
Why was he here?
Why were they here?
Why were they here, with him?
Why were they crying?
He drifted slowly to the kitchen. Why did he care? He opened the fridge and withdrew a soda and a sandwich, thought for a moment, replaced the soda, and selected a flavored water instead. Training this afternoon wouldn't be easy with a load of carbonation slowing you down.
The muffled crying in the next room suddenly amplified tenfold. Sephiroth turned, and there stood Yazoo, who had started it all.
"What is it?" Sephiroth snarled down at him, his tone only making Yazoo scream louder.
"Loz st-stole my—hic!—stole my—"
"It was mine!" A whiny voice accompanied by a tiny boy with teary green eyes and spiky hair rounded the corner, wildly swinging a stuffed SOLDIER doll by a torn arm. "It was already mine!"
"I'm gonna staaaarve!" A mournful cry erupted from the living room. "I'm all alone and I'm gonna starve! Mother! Muh-Mooootheeerrrr!"
Sephiroth gripped his head, squashing sandwich and the plastic of the water bottle into his hair. He slammed the bottle on the counter, surprising Loz and Yazoo into a split-second silence before snatching them both up off of the floor, their tiny wrists trapped in his huge fist. Jamming the sandwich into his mouth as he entered the living room, he snatched the 'starving' Kadaj from the carpet, dropping them all in a heap on the couch. The words he'd been searching for but couldn't seem to remember suddenly race through his mind.
"Time out!" he growled triumphantly around his sandwich.
Yazoo and Loz exchanged mortified glances, both of their eyes shining even brighter now that nii-chan was mad at them. He frowned down at them over the sandwich, daring them to shed anymore tears, but instead of crying, a watery smile spread across Loz's face. Before he could comment about Sephiroth looking silly with a sandwich in his mouth, it was snatched up by an angry and hungry looking Kadaj, who glared back at Sephiroth as he took his first bite. A wide-eyed Yazoo raised a shaky finger, his face growing red from the effort of trying not to cry.
"Hey! You stole Nii-chan's—Nii-chan, Kadaj st-stole your—"
Loz's smile faded as a wail crescendoed from his mouth, mourning his farewells for the stolen sandwich.
Sephiroth looked from the red faced Yazoo, to the tear-streaked face of Loz, to the wet, challenging eyes and bulging cheeks of Kadaj. There were two solutions to this, and against his conscience Sephiroth decided on the legal move to leave them there and lock himself in his room. The sirenous screams grew louder as the triplets came to stand just on the other side of the door. Sephiroth covered his head with his pillow, peeking out at the photo of Jenova on his desk.
"Why me?"
