I woke in the hospital again, confused at my surroundings. I looked around the white room and straightened my posture. They had taken out the IV's and a box of juice sat next to me. I picked it up and drank it slowly. Ugh! Orange juice.
A knock interrupted me and made a noise, allowing them in. I was relieved to see Nick smiling as he walked in. He waved a hello and sat down in the chair next to me.
"So I have good news and bad news. Which do you want first?" I shrugged and sat up, moving my legs so they were dangling off the hospital bed.
"Um. Bad?" I whispered.
"Okay." He ran a hand through his short hair. "I got pulled from the case so I won't be solving the murder of Natalie." I nodded solemnly. Something about when he said her name memories of the past we shared filtered through my mind.
"And what is the good?"
"You are going to stay at my house for a while. I suppose that isn't good or bad, more indifferent." He rambled on.
"No, that is good. I don't want to be alone." He patted my knees gently.
"Alright. Let me go take care of that paperwork and I will be back. A nurse will bring your clothes in. Ok?" He got up and left the room, leaving me alone. I closed my eyes and let the memory play like a dream.
The sweet smell of vanilla wafted through the room. I opened my eyes and looked down at Nick sleeping soundly beside me. I got up and made my way to the bathroom, washing my face quickly. The cool water trickled down my neck and I felt a cool sensation fill my body. When I went back into the bedroom Nick had rolled onto his side and was looking at me.
"Have you ever thought about kids?" I questioned quietly, leaning against the doorframe.
"Kind of a random question." He made a face and got up from the bed, stretching his arms above his head. His shirt rose and I smirked at the bare belly showing.
"Just wondering is all. Nothing to worry about." I smiled and he seemed to shrug the thought off.
"Want to go somewhere for breakfast?" I frowned slightly, not remembering that part of the dream.
"Want to go somewhere for breakfast?" It repeated. I opened my eyes and saw Nick standing in front of me. My memories washed away.
"Sure. Sorry, just thinking." I got up and looked down at the clothes I was now in. Black jeans and a large t-shirt Nick had given me. He took my hand and gently entwined his hands around mine. His callous hands stroked mine and I felt a spark in my fingertips.
"Where to?" He smiled.
