Sirius Black didn't like children. They were loud, they were messy, and they were really, really annoying. He may have been a child himself at one point, but that doesn't mean he liked the little devils. He would never understand why Lily and James were so happy about having a kid, and he couldn't understand why Remus wanted to be a teacher. He just thought that his three friends were just becoming insane. But then James comes and edits his code without even noticing what he had done.
It was 9:04 on July 31. Lily and James had become parents to one Harry James Potter exactly 4 hours and 27 minutes before. But it wasn't until 9:00 that the staff would let Remus, Peter, and Sirius to see the newborn. Peter was first out of the three to hold him, the only one that was sure he wouldn't hurt the boy or was sure the boy wouldn't hurt him. The kid cried until he was passed on. Remus was next, after a bit of persuading. Then, it was Sirius.
The little thing seemed to like Sirius, and Sirius, after a moment hesitation, couldn't help to fall in love with the tiny fingers and feet and blanket. The baby took Sirius's stray finger into a fist, and Sirius smiled. Not his usual troublesome grin, that once you saw you knew that something was going to happen and it would not be particularly fun for most people. Instead, he smiled a small but genuine smile that seemed to make the baby more at ease, so much so that he fell asleep. Then, just to make it a bit more Sirius like, rather than all quite and touching, he spoke.
"Nice one, James." He said. Lily rolled her eyes and Remus groaned. Peter began shaking from silent laughter. James face-palmed. Then it relapsed back to the silence of before, and after prying little Harry's tiny fist away from Sirius's hand, the man passed the tiny body back to Lily. Lily gave him a tired smile.
"I think that James has something to ask you in particular, actually." She said. Remus and Peter looked at each other knowingly as Sirius stood there slightly confused. The two left leaving Lily, James, Sirius, and Harry in the room. Sirius shrugged and looked to James.
"What is it, then?" Sirius asked. James raised an eyebrow, smiling widely.
"So…do you want to be godfather?" James asked. Sirius couldn't help dropping his jaw. The four were stuck there for a couple moments, James staring at Sirius with a smile, Lily holding Harry, also smiling. Harry asleep. Sirius with his jaw on the floor with bug eyes. Then Sirius moved towards James in one quick burst, hugging him. He never expected himself to feel so much for a child that was barely alive. Yet here he was.
"Thank you, James. And you too Lily. But James totally had most of the say on this one. You would've chose Remy. But anyway, thank you so much. Both of you." He said, rushed out in one breath. Lily laughed. James smile grew wider.
"James would throw a fit if you weren't godfather, let's just be honest here." Lily said, smiling. James ruffled his hair, his smile growing ever more sheepish as the conversation continued. "Besides," she continued. "You would make a great godfather, even if you are a bit insane. You can man up when the time comes. If it comes." Sirius smiled at her.
Harry began crying again, and he left as James and Lily tended to the boy. Remus came up to him with a smile on his face, Peter following him, smiling as well. Sirius smiled at the two widely.
"He's a cute kid, isn't he?" He said. The other two nodded. Sirius didn't know what sort of strange curse James or Lily or their kid set on him, but Remus looked incredibly attractive at the moment. He shook that out of his mind. Two of his best friends just had a baby. A really adorable baby, for that matter.
"He is. I'm just glad you're the godfather. You'd make a good one." Remus said. Peter nodded.
"It seems everyone thinks that, don't they." Sirius said, looking back at the room Lily and James were still in. "You're barking mad. The lot of you."
