When the kid pierced his heart, Greed knew it was over.
At last, he was finally set free from Dante's controlling grasp - from his own hollow life of just existing without any true purpose. After achieving immortality, what had been the next step in his plan, anyway? Sure, he had toyed with a few ideas perhaps, but nothing final. Not even having the world at his feet would be able to quell the overwhelming emptiness inside of him. The chimera had helped make his life more bearable, and his soul constricted when he thought about their inevitable demise. His mind rationalized that it was only normal he would miss them, for they had been his possessions. Their fate should have been his decision and not anyone else's.
Not that it mattered anymore, none of it did. He was dying, stripped of all his lives and drowning in a pool of his own blood. It reminded him of a familiar picture, one that twisted and blurred the lines between the past and present. The kid's golden hair darkened to brown, and suddenly it wasn't him he was seeing, but her. The woman he gave up everything for, knelt beside him, whispering sweet nothings in his ear as if the knife protruding from his chest wasn't torture enough. Magnifying the weight of her betrayal was shrill, maniacal laughter that echoed throughout the room and grated on his nerves.
"Well, would you look at that! The infatuated moron actually thought you loved him! How amusing!"
The merging voices faded to static noise and his vision dimmed, darkness beckoning him towards quiet oblivion.
Greed relinquished control on his own terms when he was dragged under.
...
Dedicated to the original Greed.
(I'm so tempted to write a novel-length fanfic just so he can be happy...) ;_;
