Although Carlos has heard many people in Night Vale describe Old Woman Josie as "the Jewish Grandma of the whole town," he has no idea what that really means. He's never met a Jewish person, and his own grandmothers died before he was old enough to remember them.
It's not until he sees her one day at the grocery store that he finally understands what everyone in town is talking about.
"Excuse me, Hon," she calls to him in her sweet, delicate voice. "Could you reach up and grab that bread for me?" She has her arm stretched out and is standing on tip toes, but her fingers fall just short of the braided bread.
"Of course."
"Thank you, Sweetie." Carlos can feel her eyes scanning him as he puts the bread in her basket. "You look so thin. Are you getting enough to eat? You should come over for Shabbat dinner tomorrow."
He shakes his head, confused. "For what dinner?"
"Shabbat. The Jewish day of rest." She gasps, realizing, "You must be Carlos! I'm so sorry I haven't invited you over before, it's just been so busy with the Angels staying at my house and everything…"
"It's okay, I've been pretty busy myself. I'd love to come over for dinner tomorrow, thanks."
"Of course, of course, Honey. Well, I better get over to the Kosher section before one of the hooded figures takes the last Kosher chicken again." She turns, takes a few steps, then looks back. "But I must ask you…have you been listening to Cecil's radio show?"
Carlos' eyes widen and he's sure she notices, but he still tries to calm himself, says "No, like I said…I've been busy."
"Okay, Hon, whatever you say. But just so you know, I've known Cecil his whole life and he's such a sweet boy and I think the two of you could be very happy together."
Carlos can feel his face growing hot. He pretends to be very interested in the recipe for Taco Salad Served with a Side of Imaginary Corn printed on a bag of tortilla chips.
"I know! I'll invite Cecil over for Shabbat dinner, too! Does that sound like a good plan, Sweetie? I think it sounds perfect. See you tomorrow, and make sure you dress nicely for you-know-whoooo."
As she skips away, Carlos smiles to himself. He thinks he's going to like having a Jewish grandma.
