The words echoed in Sophie's head, a constant torture. If only she'd looked closer, looked deeper, inspected every tiny detail. But as she waited for Tam by the stone walls, Sophie realized that any amount of contemplating wouldn't make a difference in the end. She was doomed anyway.
If only Keefe were here.
Once again, regrets popped up in her thoughts. Why hadn't she pressed more when Keefe had told her the news? Why didn't she spend more time with him? Heck, why didn't she leave with him?
Not now, Sophie, she told herself, with a decent amount of scolding. Now wasn't the time to look back. There was only one place she could go.
