One Last Kiss
"Where is he?" Belle asked the guard. "I have to see him." The guard led her through the dark passageways of the palace dungeon. The halls and staircases downward seemed never ending. They wanted him buried, Belle thought. As she walked on, it seemed that, while torches were plentiful on the walls, it was getting darker. It didn't matter to her, as everything had seemed just a bit darker since she had left Rumpelstiltskin's castle.
When everyone was looking, Rumpel was his usual impish self. When no one was looking, he sat on the ground and stared at the wall, looking sad and missing Belle. She was right. He regretted rejecting her bitterly. As he sat there, Rumpelstiltskin noticed that the room was growing darker. Its starting, he thought. He sighed and hoped his new life would help him forget, though he didn't feel he deserved to. She was dead, and he partly blamed himself for that. The sound of footsteps jarred him out of his thoughts. For a second, he wondered what the Queen could possibly want now, but then he realized that it was two sets of footsteps. Rumpel's eyes caught a flash of a blue dress rounding the corner. Belle's dress. He got onto his feet in stunned silence as she came into full view. "She told me you died". The words came out of Rumpelstiltskin's mouth before he even knew he'd said them. Belle came closer to the cell. "I know, that's why I'm here. I couldn't bear the thought of you thinking that I was dead". Belle very politely asked the guard to leave them alone. The cell room suddenly became quite cold and even darker than before. Belle reached her hand through the bars. Rumpel grabbed her hand gently. She still loved him. This time, he would not run away from it.
"You're happy to see me, aren't you?" Belle said.
"I'm definitely not unhappy." Rumplestiltskin smiled. "I haven't been the same without you."
"I know. Neither have I. Its like there is a hole in my heart and only one thing that can fill it is you."
"I know what you mean, dearie."
The darkness was now worse than ever, and the howling of the wind shook the room. Rumpelstiltskin knew he had to do what he was going to do quickly. The wind became even stronger.
"You once called me a coward, and I was. Would you give me chance to prove myself?"
Belle looked him in the eyes and nodded. The wind was now howling around them. Rumpel put his hand on Belle's cheek and pulled her as close as the pikes that served as bars would allow. Debris was raining down and swirling all around them. He leaned his face in close to hers, and she to him. Suddenly, a black smoke enveloped them and the wind pulled them apart. Rumpelstiltskin could hear himself call out her name, and then everything went black.
