Sayonara

The sound of a piano envelops the hospital, twisting around the two figures in a sad, silky caress. A girl stood to one side looking down as if to memorize the movement of once strong, broken hands. An intake of breath was heard as the melody took a brief pause, filling the room with sharply honed silence.

- "Ehh. I wanted to hear more."

The male figure glanced up at his visitor, a brief flash of warmth flickering across his eyes. He could almost see her braids, the one image that pierced his soul and refused to leave.

- "Hey"

The girl moved to make herself more comfortable.

-"You still owe me that bento you know."

A slight, wavering chuckle made its way through the air. Thoughts shimmered in his mind. Perhaps, if he filled the air with empty exchanges and fleeting dreams (because all he could see was his vacant future) he could go on pretending.

-"Yea, you haven't changed. You still eat enough for five people."

The guilt was suffocating her, more, she was searching for something more to fill the void. Wretched reminders of the past, and hollow words, she found and clutched onto, all paled in comparison to what she had lost.

-"Ahh! That's the first thing you have to say to me? You know, to make a woman happy you have to say what she wants to hear. How about 'I missed you Hiyono'."

A slight rustle of sheets, and a sigh surrendered. Then the melody started again, dancing, skittering, it slowly merged into a familiar tune. This song haunted her head. This song he could never forget.

-"Outside the window, kira kira kira ri. A shooting star streaks, kira kira kira ki"

A wry smile formed on his lips, he knew she would take the opening.

-"As weird as ever, like I said it's good to know you can count on some people to never change."

-"Ayumu I- "

Eyes closed tight, he wondered for a moment if he might forget. Such exquisite pain, only his to bear, and he breathed out his last hope.

- "Even so. I missed you, Hiyono..."

Just a whisper, fragile breath, yet so utterly bright. Something snapped back into place, an awkward pause, and then sudden laughter, this time in understanding. The melody changed once more, into a complicated dance. With eyes closed a murmur floated delicately above the confusion of notes.

- "You know I believed in you."

The girl gave one last smile as the door shut softly in departure.

-"I know, I did too."

And his farewell drew itself out selfishly, leaving behind no trace of the final chord.

Author's note: So...it's ok if you're confused, I am too (lol!) It was suppose to be a simple exchange between the two, but sadly I think my head is made up of enough wool to knit a sweater (and a rather warm one might I say). Please review anyway if you at least enjoyed reading my bizarre rambles :D
