Chapter 1

They were walking up the dark hall with a candle in hand. Their long black robes dragging on the ground. All you could hear was the menacing sounds of swishing and footfalls. Even though there were about ten little kids. It was so silent if you listened hard enough you could hear them breathing. One of the kids giggled but it was cut short. You could hear the whack as the wood paddle connected to the little girls' butt. Tears filled her eyes and one slowly got free and slid down her cheek.

"You know the rules," An elder told the group, a warning for the others. The little girl shook her head, yes. The elder had a long narrow face with about a million wrinkles. He has been in the secret society for as long as he has lived. He was born into it and so was his brother, who has been deceased for a long while. They came to a wide open area. They know the drills so they spread out in a circle. The elder with the candle went to the front of the room and waited for them to settle down.

"Let us recite the pledge," He told the group. So they began.

"We the secret society of Anthrop worship you with all our souls, hearts, minds, and bodies. Please let us be worthy enough to worship you and hopefully one day join you in your world of all holiness." The group finished and took a seat on the cold hard ground. There were murmurs among the crowd.

One little girl thought, why are we here this time? Another thought, I don't want to worship. I want to play, if there is such a thing. These people did not know the words fun, play, and happiness, as a good thing. In the Anthrop school

they had learned those words as fiction and something that isn't real.

But it is if only they would look hard enough, they might find that it did exist.

"I called you all here today to discuss a very serious and urgent matter," The elder said. Murmurs ran through the crowd, but it did not last long.

Was there any other kind of matter? Thought a little toddler named Brittany.

I don't think so, only the fiction kind. Thought Briana. She and Brittany could communicate with each other through telepathy because they are twins. Telepathy is a very good thing to have when you're not allowed to talk.

Are you okay? Brittany asked.

Yeah it was only a little whack. Briana thought back. But it wasn't, it hurt her.

"What is this urgent matter?" Asked a tall man who had blue eyes. He looked a little funny because his right hand was at his ear in a horn sort of position. It was like that because that is the only way you can talk to elders.

"The roof has been crumbling over our ancient city," The elder said. Again murmurs ran through the crowd. "Silence!" A hush fell over the crowd, if you were caught talking you might have your tongue cut out. The punishments were bad.

"How is our roof crumbling?" Asked the same man. Everyone nodded their head in agreement. They wanted to know.

"We are still looking into it, but we think there might be a unholy person digging on the outside," The elder said solemnly. An unholy person also known as someone who doesn't believe the same things as the secret society.
