Haninozuka Mitsukuni isn't sure why he's at the ball.
He doesn't belong here, though everybody else does. Hikaru, Kaoru, Kyouya, and even Takashi all have invitations - chances to be the prince, the one who gets to dance with the princess, their girl in rags dressed up until midnight. Tamaki is exempt, of course - he's just the coachman.
However, Hunny is still at the ball with no invitation - he has no right to be, but he can't stop himself. In their little charade, he's just the fairy godmother (or is it godfather? Hunny hasn't quite grasped the concept) - the one who knows everything that is going on and is helping Cinderella along, dropping hints about possible princes and giving the prince candidates advice as well. Hunny is allowed to approach but not to have, to only see the magic he's made and never touch. Even though Tamaki the coachman has weaved his own magic, only Hunny understands its intricacies, its fragility - Hunny doubts Tamaki even understands a tenth of what he's doing, though Hunny has an inkling that a certain redheaded twin is catching on.
Hunny explains his need to be at the ball to Takashi by saying he wants to see how things turn out. Takashi replies solemnly, 'Be careful, Mitsukuni,' and Hunny doesn't even know why he tried - lying to Takashi is as effective as lying to himself. It's easy to deceive the others, but Takashi always knows. Hunny thinks that if he has to give away the princess, giving her to Prince Takashi is the most favourable choice.
But the mere thought of handing over his Cinderella makes him feel like turning the prince who took her into a frog.
Hunny knows he can't though. Their situation is a delicate one - any unexpected variables and their coach will just be a pumpkin again, and the princess just a girl in rags with no way back to the world whence she came from and no means to return to the ball where her prince awaits.
And a ball with no princess to dance with would be an awfully dull ball.
Though it isn't as if Haruhi would dance with Hunny anyway.

Apocolocyntosis basically means 'pumpkinification', and I don't know. I like HunnyHaru, so this is where that came from. I read the Pumpkinification of the Divine Claudius by Seneca recently, and it reminded me of Kaoru's Cinderella analogy, and I wondered - Hunny always seems to be on top of things, so wouldn't he have had the same idea?
