Hi guys, here's another one shot. I'll probably just be writing one shots from here on out. Thanks for your patience with me. There is also an update about my story What If on my profile.
When I awake, bits of sunlight break through the cracks in the shades, making the room lighter. I roll over expecting to find Peeta, but I am surprised when the space next to me is empty. I feel that tinge of paranoia. The same thing I always feel when I don't know where he is. The fear that he had been taken from me, just like everyone else had been. I get up to investigate, hoping the tiny part of me that had suspicions was not right. I am immediately greeted outside the bedroom door to the smell of bread baking. A relieved smile crosses my lips and I sneak down to the kitchen quietly. I find Peeta bending down beside the oven. I come up behind him and wrap my arms around his waist. He's startled for a moment but smiles when he realizes who it was.
"Good morning Mrs. Mellark," he says, beaming.
I smile, letting his words echo in my head for a moment.
"Good morning Mr. Mellark," I reply happily.
Katniss Everdeen-Mellark. Katniss Mellark. It has a nice ring to it. He turns to face me and stares into my eyes lovingly. As I stare back into his, and I can't help but think that, as of last night, those eyes and everything that was Peeta was mine forever. I know they have been already, but now it was official. And I was his. I realize in that moment that marrying Peeta is no longer a punishment brought on by my stupidity and President Snow. It never really was. Marrying him is not loosing my freedom; it was the prying eyes of the capitol that would've taken that away forever. But that is no longer a concern. This is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time. It was possibly the best thing that has ever happened to me.
So after he leans down and presses his lips to mine gently, his kiss full of love, I pull away slightly and rest my forehead against his. For a moment I am silent, but then I feel my courage building inside of me.
"I love you, Peeta," I whisper. And I realize that this is the first time that I have actually said this. The words feel so right. I didn't even have to think. They came so naturally.
He smiles because he realizes that the words are true, that I love him with everything I am.
"I love you too, Katniss," he says softly, a smile still playing on the corners of his mouth.
I smile too. Katniss Mellark sounds about perfect.
