You're in my arms
And all the world is calm
The music playing on for only two
So close together
And when I'm with you
So close to feeling alive
Galinda was off getting a refreshment or powdering her nose or talking to one of her many friends. Fiyero had lost track. All he knew was that suddenly he was no longer content being "Prince Perfect." He realized that he didn't want Galinda. He wanted the green girl in his arms, Elphaba. It felt like they were the only two in the room, in the entire world, even. She saw him in a way that no one else, not even his parents, had.
A life goes by
Romantic dreams must die
So I bid mine goodbye and never knew
So close was waiting, waiting here with you
And now forever I know
All that I wanted to hold you
So close
Fiyero had always lived for the moment, never giving a thought to tomorrow. He'd moved from one girl to the next, changing girls as often as he changed schools. He knew how to be the 'perfect' boyfriend—the right things to say, the right gifts to bring at the right time, etc. Yet with Elphaba, he could be imperfect and she would still care for him, unlike his other 'friends,' who would sever all acquaintance if he was anything less than perfect. So, he swayed with her in the middle of the Ozdust Ballroom, savoring their time together until Galinda returned.
So close to reaching that famous happy end
Almost believing this was not pretend
And now you're beside me and look how far we've come
So far we are so close
Fiyero had grown up being read fairy tales and had believed in them completely. Yet, the more he lived, the less he saw evidence of their existence. He had now become a cynic, yet he found Elphaba softening him. They'd come a long way together—at first, antagonizing one another, and now, friends. He unconsciously pulled Elphaba closer to him, a gentle smile gracing his lips.
How could I face the faceless days
If I should lose you now?
We're so close
To reaching that famous happy end
And almost believing this was not pretend
Let's go on dreaming for we know we are
So close
So close
And still so far
Fiyero didn't want to relinquish his hold on Elphaba. He couldn't, wouldn't, lose her. Not now that he had admitted his feelings for her to himself. Yet, Galinda was drawing him away, pulling him into her own arms. Before abandoning Elphaba, though, he bowed and kissed her hand. As he spun Galinda away, he happened to glance back and discovered Elphaba staring at him, then at her hand that he had kissed, then at him again. He flushed slightly before turning his attention back to Galinda. He would more closely examine his feelings for the green girl at a later date. At the moment, he needed to focus on living up to his reputation for "Dancing Through Life."
