The house unprotected, in the kitchen, they were eating.
Laughing. Cooking. Happy. Loving. Confident.
The cheerful sound, the scent of the food sickened Bellatrix. The first thing she did was to blast the table away, throwing the couple to the floor.
Their screams numbed her senses. But they eventually quieted, and she heard nothing but the wailing baby upstairs.
The sight of the food spread on the flagstones made her stomach heave. Barty was standing halfway through the room. Before crossing it to join her, he picked a small, red apple up from the mess, taking a bite.
Bellatrix screeched.
